several weeks ago during a winter storm the "bones" of an old shipwreck washed up on the outer beach at wellfleet, which is a thing that happens from time to time on cape cod.... dozens of ships of all kinds have foundered and gone down in gales and nor'easters because of the shoals, shifting sandbars and cross currents just offshore... I finally trucked myself downcape and trudged a quarter mile south of newcomb hollow beach to see it for myself.... it's best to go during low tide since the atlantic ocean often slams up against these cliffs during winter weather, and they erode at the rate of about three feet per year...

Amazing photo and information. I just came from the bones of the shipwreck. I noticed how mired they were in the sand already. I'm glad you have person walking in this to give it the perspective it needed. Just a great two posts this morning Mary.

It is an amazing photo, Mary. If it has eroded about 3' per year, and if I hit the keys on my calculator correctly, that would mean the sea has reclaimed about 2 1/2 football fields worth of land since we became a country. Amazing photo and amazing narrative.

Fascinating to see this - snow and a beach is a rare combination over here in the south of England!

Whew! Chilling in many ways. Imagine the storm, the peril, the moment when the crew faced disaster. And here it is, many years later, a ghost telling the story. Great shot!
