Why do the pictures come out square when the lens is round??

Every time I close the door on reality it comes in through the windows.
Some images only look like small copies of themselves when viewed as a thumbnail. This one looks like model of a molecule as a thumbnail - very different from what I see in full screen. Those translucent shapes fanning out look like the wings of birds and the "twigs" like lightning, as though the fanning of giant wings is creating the lightning. A very atmospheric piece, Lori.
