This is a Canada Steamship Lines bulk freighter called the CSL Laurentien. It was launched in 1977 as the Louis R. Desmarais. It is a nearly 38,000 ton self-unloading vessel used for bulk cargo movements. The Laurentien and other self-unloaders (up to 5 at a time) can meet a very large ocean bulker out in the water and load the cargo for overseas destinations. Because of this capability, the bulker would not have to enter port to load. The Laurentien, and CSL's other ships in the fleet, move over 30 million tons of cargo annually. ***I'm thinking about entering this image in the current contest. Let me know what you think. Thanks for any views or comments!

Well Tina...it has the usual requirements for the contest..it is a 'tool' and a necessary one it is too!

Best of Luck if you do enter it!

I'm not one for obsevation or direction in relationship to competition, however, this is a very cool capture my Friend. I like your work very much and in 'my view' you have already won!

As a retired seafarer I thank you for the info here Tina. It is a nice photo of the ship but it is a mode of transport of cargo just as a truck or a goods train. So in my opinion it cannot be called a tool of the trade. Even your camera is far better suited to be called tool of the trade.

Smooth seas do not make skilful sailors.

Thanks for bringing back fond memories - I grew up on Lake Erie, and miss the vast expanse of water the Great Lakes provide. Remember I'm still new and kinda' green here, but I'm agreeing with Ramad that this would better fit in a transportation-themed category. All that aside, it's a beautiful capture that still tells a story; good composition and nicely framed by the trees in the foreground.

my best images happen by accident. there is so much to be seen in the minutiae surrounding us that we often miss the very best.

I guess in a broader sense, it could be called a tool of the trade. But it IS a cool shot of the ship. I like it!~

Very cool shot Tina. I like how it is framed by Mother Nature. Far as a contest entry , I think it's a great one. It is a necessary tool of the trade in the world economy as well as local economies . In the United States we teach in our high schools and universities that a tool of a trade is anything that promotes and contributes to a certain industry . Shipping contributes to a vast variety of "trades ". Advertising is considered a tool of the trade . Even Roosters .... they contribute to and support a "trade ". Without these things certain Trades would be in serious trouble . I like that you are thinking outside of the box. Go for it Girl & Good Luck !

I am not going to "muddy the waters," any more then they are on whether this is suitable for the contest, Tina. I am sure you will make the decision.
It is a good shot and good information. Good luck with whatever you choose to do. Did I mention I was a politician? :)

Nice colors in there, Tina. I never heard of self unloading boats before. It's good that you got the lettering nice and clear too. and as Marsha, points out, the framing with the trees was also a good idea.

I've wanted to work on one of these boats. Growing up around The great lakes I would see the freighters navigate through the straights of the Detroit river.
