Trying out the combination of the canon 70-300 IS USM lens with the kenko DGX 1x4 converter. I did get some decent shots, but overall that combo does not do as well as the canon 70-200mm f/4L with that converter.

I was very pleased with some of the shots, and very dissapointed in most of them. ?? Maybe I just don't have it figured out yet. :)

I'm saying this for a friend, who was curious about that combo, since he has the 70-300 as well. Most of the butterflies, and bee captures I got just did not look that good.

Thank you for looking, and commenting.

It takes a bit of practice with exposure and shutter speed.
You nailed this pretty darn good!

The composition and detail in this are outstanding, Sandi. The detail in the butterfly is exquisite - I think the combo does a great job so I'm a bit confused on what you perceive as disappointing? Regardless this is an excellent post -

Well, Tigs, I'll just start with, "ditto for me". Most of the comments above use superlatives about focus, clarity, sharpness and perfection. Who am I to buck the system? Call me a sheep, but I agree with what everyone has already said. Any other words are just wasted verbiage with no other purpose than to draw out my comment or to practice my typing. You might ask, "Why would you want to dribble on while saying absolutely nothing new?" Well, the simple answer is that I wouldn't do that. I'm here for a good reason and that is to critique your posting. I have better things to do than babble on and on about nothing. In fact, my schedule is just crammed today. I'll tell you that much. I have places to go. People to see. Time is money. Money is the root of all evil. Idle hands are the devil's playground.

Super shot, Tigs. I agree about the 70-200mm for butterflies. Sometimes I use a 90mm macro because they are so intent on what they are doing, that they stay with a plant until they are satisfied. Great dof, color and clarity in the shot.

I agree with everyone else ... the focus is spot. The vivid green sets the yellow tones off nicely. Superbly captured, Sandi.

First of all this is really a great macro photo. Perfectly composed image. IMHO without a very well composed background none of the shots are near perfect. You do take both main subjects and backgrounds very well and that makes you a good photographer (in my book ;) ).

About combination of your lenses, I agree with Doug, in time practice makes you learn everything about them and will take better photos. Every combination has it's own 'trics'.

I have a Tamron 79-300 with 1:2 macro capability. So, I don't need extension tubes. In time I've learned it's trics and now happily take shots with this lens.

So, you're on the right way, go on experiencing, though already you have great shots, you'll be very happy too.

I have a small question about sizes of your photos. Your macro photos have small sizes. Is this because you crop or resize them? If you take your photos in full size with your great compositions, would be really great.
