One of the many tigers at EFRC .

Just a few months ago, they had their fist accident since cat camp opened in 1991.

One of the keepers who had been trained, and has been there for about a year, apparently was not totally focused on her duties, while cleaning a tiger enclosure.

They are able to separate the cats and keep them contained so that they can clean the enclosure. This girl did not follow protocol, and Raja the tiger ended up in the same area as she was. He actually had her head in his mouth! It is thought it was more of an act of curiosity, other than aggression-something was different, and he was curious.

The girl (Marissa) came through it, and has had some surgeries, and has a few more to go.

We were able to talk to Joe Taft the founder about what happened. He told us there just happened to be a fireman out on the road outside of cat camp, and he responded right away, (there is a helicopter pad on the premises) Joe, and the other workers kept their cool, and actually was able to talk Raja off of her,and had some chicken to keep him occupied. If they had panicked, and handled the situation differently, he probably would have killed her, in reaction to the commotion. Marissa is now strictly a tour guide, and does not work with the big cats, even though she has told Joe she would like too, but from talking to him, I think that will never happen, and I don't think she should in my opinion.

Joe has over twenty years invested in this wonderful safe haven, and that was the first accident, and they don't want to have anymore!

Marissa is a young thin woman, and it would have been nothing of an effort for Raja ,to do more harm. She has some facial deformity with a slight speech impediment, but she seems to have a good outlook on things.

Sorry this was so long, but some might find the time to read it, and thank you for your comments.

I used the canon 40D /70-300 lens for these captures taken through fencing.

He looks well fed Sandi. Nice and sharp portrait with clear details. Same kind of accident happened in Germany recently. The man was a very experienced keeper but he made a mistake and for once forgot to close the second gate to the enclosure outside where he was doing some cleaning. For the tiger this was an intrusion in his domain. He was killed instantly with a bite to the neck. There were zoo visitors watching the scene!

He looks so timid too!...

I know over here one of the keepers was killed at a popular zoo, because she didn't follow 'protocol'

Excellent portrait Sandi and interesting story too - you can't be too careful about following the protocols when dealing with wild animals.

Well, this Raja is a mean and fat old boy, but he just behaved according to the rules he obeys... I would dare to say that most of the accidents in ZOO and/or circus [which I hate sorry to say...] are in a significant degree stimulated by the public behaviour - shouting, screaming etc commotion as you said. HOWGH.
Love this portrait, story with happy ending and an educational meaning, and comments from the others whom I addressed in my comment. once more HOWGH

I was going to say, "OOH, Big Kitty Cat!" But in light of what happened to Marissa I'll say, Big Tiger, stay away! Some people think it's cool to have a tiger or lion cub or a wolf pup, but these beautiful animals are wild and should never be considered 'pets'... I haven't been to a zoo since the 1970's, I think they're wrong places for animals unless they have space enough to roam, or like this place is, a haven for big cats... Raja was only acting like a tiger. This portrait, btw, is gorgeous, Sandi.

As with any job terrible things can happen if we are negligent in our duty. I hate that this person had to suffer for that negligence. Your picture is wonderful as always Sandi.

I'm sorry to hear about the accident but very glad to hear she is ok...perhaps some who work with these big cats can get too comfortable with them at times and forget to stay on guard...this one sure has a serious look about him but still a beauty and love the vibrant colors.

Such a story ! I am glad she is recovering. She was very lucky. We had a similar attack here in NZ a few years ago but sadly it was fatal. The White Tiger also lost its life

This is a wonderful portrait of Raja Sandi..the colours and detail are superb.
