Something a bit different, not the best I know, but thought I would share it. I decided to try using the flash on the 40D with the 70-300, the shot was taken about 7:30 pm a couple of weeks ago. I still have one or two at the feeder, but they will soon join the others that are migrating.

The flash worked very well. I've tried flash on hummingbirds in the evening as well ... sometimes with success & sometimes not. I like the lighting on the hummer & feeder. Excellent, Sandi.

I too am surprised the hummer did not react to the flash - excellent capture.

I wish I was a Glow Worm, a Glow Worm's never glum, 'cause how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?

The flash has given it just the right amount of light. Nice one Sandi. Probably the humming bird is used to lightning. :)

Sandi, you didn't make the same mistake that I do often when using a 'fill-in flash' with built-in gear: to forget the hood. When using external flash equipment, it's not a problem to keep the hood attached on the lens. By using external flash gear with the capability to adjust the vertical angle (a so called 'indirect-flash'), an angle of about 10 degrees will satisfy to reduce the reflections.
Although very difficult lighting conditions, your result is very good. Well done my friend.

A lovely shot, Sandi. Trimming the black by about half on the left side will give
the little bird more prominence.

It did very well for built in camera flash Sandi. Flash is a handy thing to have for fill. It also can act as a strobe to freeze some movement. Good shot.

I must say the flash brought out some nice light in this capture especially hummingbirds eye and feeder plus very nice colours ,detail and composition as well.

Looks like a 1st year bird. Maybe that is why it is a little
late,(inexperience).
