The Eastern Black Swallowtail

We had beautiful weather yesterday, warm but not real humid, so spent a good part of the day at the Calendar garden. I plan on going back today, before the rain, and humidity return.

This species of butterfly are very active, and just don't sit still for long. I used the 100mm lens tv(shutter speed) 1/1000sec.- AV F5.6-ISO 400-focal length 100.I did a fair amount of cropping on this one.

The sunlight was dancing on him, as he fluttered about.

The (Eastern) Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes), also called the American Swallowtail or Parsnip Swallowtail, is a butterfly found throughout much of North America.

Madama Butterfly comes to mind. Mystical lighting and fine close-up work, Sandi.

I've never seen one of those beauties around here, I'm jealous. The blue iridescence over black seems to occur in a few other insects, particularly among the various tarantula hawk wasps. For it to occur in such different species, it makes me wonder if it doesn't provide a physical benefit to the wearer, like cooling on a hot day. It looks like you're having a great time with the new lens, it's an addicting toy isn't it?
