The bird visits the feeder daily. I think it is a female downy woodpecker, but if you look the beak is very long, the body is shorter and more plump than normal, and the feet are large. I have sent this pic. into a website that will help ID birds, so I'm curious if I will hear back. I wonder if it's some kind of deformity, and is a actually a Downy?

I have already heard back from the bird ID site, they also think it is a female Downy, but has a malformed bill, not typical.

I appreciate your comments, thank you.

That beak is not the beak of a woodpecker. Could be an offspring of a woodpecker and another bird. Unusual find and capture Sandi.

Unusual coloring this little fellow has, I don't know what it is, but you have taken a very nice photo here.

I would say that it's a rose, but I'm sure it's a bird and not a flower. Raj has an interesting theory. It could be part woodpecker and part penguin. One way or the other, it's a fine shot.

Dorothy Michaels: No, just Dorothy. Alan's always Alan, Tom's always Tom and John's always John. I have a name too. It's Dorothy, capital D-O-R-O-T-H-Y.

I am sure it has a big appetite, too. Nice shot, Sandi.

---I think it is a female downy woodpecker---

Sandi, to be sure about it, please ask Richie, and think he can give you the proper answer.

It's definitely not a rose or the offspring as the result of a marriage between a woodpecker and penguin as suggested by Dorothy, ☺ . A perfect 'birdie' portrait however, my friend!

It's called avian keratin disorder. We saw a huge rise in this sort of malformation in Alaska. It is increasing in numbers, affecting multiple bird species, and scientists are scrambling to find an environmental cause.

I hope she survives. That sweet little Downy may need people like you, who put out feeders, in order to make it.

And I'm glad that you reported it, Sandi. It's important.

Poor wee creature - I hope the deformity does not stop her from feeding properly.
At least she has a good supply of food kindly provided.
A super shot Sandi

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Certainly unusual but a nice capture, glad you are feeding her.

I'm glad for Lisa's explanation. We have deformed birds here as well, but they are usually blue jays. I've not been able to figure out why.

It is a beautiful capture Sandi. It seems disorder is part of the norm these days but we still have to hope.
