By the looks of this Monarch I think it had just emerged, and was making use of the warm sand to dry off, and warm up before it's long journey.
I spotted this Monarch when I visited a light house in Sept. while on vacation. In my mind I'm thinking it made the journey safely! :)

The Monarch has missed the group migration. Good shot of him/her on the sand instead of a flower !

Smooth seas do not make skilful sailors.
The sand really makes a great texture for the background Tigz.
It takes a lot of "sand" for a butterfly to take such a long journey.

What a unique find and capture, SAS...so unusual to find a monarch on a sandy surface like this...it really stands out...great shot and a fave for me.

The guy must need some salt and grit in its diet. Once saw bunch gathered on a dead fish before. Never knew that about them. Always pictured them on flowers.
