Well he’s a robber fly and all robbers are villains aren’t they? Added: 15/12/2006 1:06 PM because people are asking. I used a Canon 300D, 70-200mm zoom lens with 2 extension rings, Canon speedlight. Manual focus, manual exposure F:14 at 200th second and flash set to plus 2/3 stop. Everything held steady by a tripod and fired by cable release. The flash didn’t bother him at all.

Wow! What a fantastic close up! Clarity, composition are perfect, and marvelous details of this villain. Weird how his large eye looks like a gem stone! Boy, you can see all of his body parts and the texture...yuk. I can't look at him for too long as I'm not crazy about flys, although I do realize you have a beauty of an insect image here. Good going Robert :^)

That is one totally amazing macro Robert. Not least because I know how difficult it is to get close to these skittish beasts. I must have coveered half of Hampshire trying to get a decent shot of Hornet Robber Fly - and never succeeded:(
The clarity on this is superb with nos 'soft' spots at all. Very, very well done.

This mail is a natural product. The slight variation in spelling and grammar enhance its individual character and beauty and in no way are tobe considered flaws or defects.
Well, you obviously have prettier flys in Autrailia than we do here in the States. He doesn't look like a fly to me so I don't see him as a villian. The clarity and detail of this speciman is a knockout. It's also a keeper.

I also love the reflection of your flash in it's eye..it came out roughly in a pentagonish shape, perhaps showing the different layers in it's compound eyes
