I drove 600 kilometres inland last August to get away from coastal clouds for the total lunar eclipse. I never saw one from beginning to end before. It was an awesome experience. The nearest town was 80 kilometres away and all creatures’ great and small became absolutely silent. It was so dark that I had to use a torch to find the camera 1 metre away. This shot was taken during the darkest moments with a 400mm lens at F/5.6, 2-second exposure at ISO 1000 with in camera noise reduction. It hasn’t been enhanced with software, this is what I saw. Enjoy.

Robert, the distance was somewhat to far for me to go to the southern hemisphere in order to capture this phenomenon, lol. Glad you used all your photographic skills and did all this effort for us. The result is stunning! Thanks a lot for that.

One day I hope to be able to just hop in my car and drive 600 miles to shoot a lunar eclipse.... Wow, this is stunning and you're dead on with the color and the detail of the Old Man's face (not Owd Bob, that is :)

awesome job Robert, The moon looks different from your side of the world ;) It is amazing you were so far away from the 'living' world. And I don't see any noise, you must have a good camera with this noise reduction on iso 1000! But I don't think I will drive that far to get this image, but I'm not used to the distance. Your next one must be an eclipse! It must be great!!!

No wonder the wildlife was silent. Beautiful image to contemplate and a well taken shot. No time to goof around with the settings I guess. When it's in front of you for a brief time, you have to go for it.

Super shot. I was in one in the 80's. It went completely silent then as the shadow moved away the birds began chirping thinking it was sunrise...it was an experience. Imagine what people thought hundreds of years ago not fully understanding what was going on.

Wow Robert..this is amazing my friend. The title is pretty awesome as well. I remember years ago watching a solar eclipse from a hospital window where I was working using x-ray film as our 'viewer'...it was an experience I will never forget. I can only imagine the feeling that you had as the world around you...including all creatures great and small watched this event unfold with you. Definitely a moment to be held near to your heart.
Your image is worth a thousand words. Thank you for sharing this wondrous experience with me ;=)
