Found these still on tree last week when at the orchard but due to be picked the following day. These are Rome apples or Red Rome or Rome Beauty - the same apple goes by any of those names. They are usually a late October apple around here but were in several weeks early this year due to spring and summer weather conditions. This apple dates back to the 19th century and was discovered in Rome township in Ohio. It's primararily a baking or cooking apple as it holds it shape well. As you can see it's color is all-over deep red with white spots. All comments and critiques appreciated.

Wow, they do look luscious. I am thinking of all the pies I could be making. I have seen those in the market, but mostly Macintosh is the preeminent New England apple though they are producing more of the other varieties like Gala, Golden, Jonathan, Paula, Cortland, etc. My favorite for fresh eating has always been the Mac, but some of the others are quite delicious too. We had a very warm spell in March this year that brought on the blossoms early and then they got hit by frost, so our growing season started early and ended early and the price of apples and cider got very expensive.

Thanks to you, I now know where Rome apples got their name and these sure are inviting in their rich reds. Beautiful shot of them, Kathy.

They are known as Rome Beauty here and one of my favourite apple types.
This is a super image Kathy, really showing off the wonderful red of these beauties.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust
