This was taken yesterday morning with my new Nikon camera - it was taken with the full 30X zoom. I had been waiting for him to land and of course he landed as far from me as possible in a little cove. My husband estimates it was between 200-300 yards away but I don't really know. There is a terrible algae bloom right now on the lagoon but the herons seem to like wading in that. I did apply a soft focus on the shot except for the heron to try to emphasize him more.

That little cove has a gorgeous variety of color tones. The Heron is not very sharp, but at such a focal length, that's no surprise. Especially if your shutter speed was relatively slow, and the amount of detail in the background indicates a small aperture and consequently a slow shutter speed. You might try increasing your ISO speed to 400 and leaving it there. It will increase your exposure capabilities by at least 2 full stops and /or 2 higher shutter speeds. It may produce a bit of Noise in low light situations, but that's easy to wipe out in editing.

Kathy, I like the variety of colors in the backdrop. Doug has given you some very good advice, about increasing the ISO, he gave me the same awhile back, and now I keep the camera set on 400 for the ISO. Tigs♥ =^..^=

A lovely water colour look in the scene Kathy. Beautiful colours in the photo and a nice capture of the heron.
