This was quite a spectacular piece at the lapidary museum. The elephant itself is carved from grey agate the tusks are light agate with 24K gold tips. The howdah sits atop the elephant and was used as a carriage for the rider. Among the wealthy it was made of gold and heavily jeweled. This one is made of 24k gold and heavily jeweled with emeralds, rubies and sapphires. The whole piece was about 24" long and 18" high at the very top of the howdah. I'm not sure my picture does it justice as it was shot through glass, but it was quite beautiful.

The Pachyderm looks good beguiled with all the stones, gems and gold Kathy. I learned a new word today thanks to you.
It is a fine howdah you do.

Would be rather nervous when I had to make a ride in such a carriage, lol.

Wonderful piece of art Kathy, captured very well.

All the precious and particularly semi-precious stones are my passion [one of my many passions that is:)]. Agate is supposed to be my stone according to some horoscopes etc esoteric stuff :)
This image is so full of detail, elegance and oriental atmosphere that it takes one's breath away, dear Kathy.
Thanks so much for this wonderful post which I saved to use as my DT on Sundays and major holidays :)

That's one tricked out elephant. Be kind of hard to miss it coming crashing through the underbrush. A good capture of the statuette, Kathy.
