Photographed at the butterfly exhibition at the Chicago Botanic Garden. He was taking a drink from the wet sponge found around the exhibit and they also have cut fruit for the b'flies to drink from such as melons or oranges. The flower behind him is a type of verbena very attractive to butterflies. Here's some additional information on this type of butterfly: An owl butterfly is in the genus Caligo which means darkness. They are known for their huge eyespots, which resemble owls' eyes. They are found in the rainforests and secondary forests of Mexico, Central, and South America. Owl butterflies are very large, 65200 mm (2.67.9 in), and fly only a few meters at a time, so avian predators have little difficulty in following them to their settling place. However, the butterflies preferentially fly in dusk, when few avian predators are around. There are various named types of owls, this one is the largest called Magnificent Owl. Interesting camouflage as perhaps larger predators would think he is an owl or something yummy to eat. Mother Nature and her interesting ways. Well done, Kathy.

I really think this is a good one, and your narrative was very well written. Thanks for sharing this one with us. The last time I went to a butterfly exhibit in Fort Wayne, I found it very disturbing as there were so many dead ones laying around, in the enclosure. Not sure why,but it really bothered me. tigs=^..^=

Good one of this butterfly Kathy. The morpho butterfly is very similar but smaller and the inside of their wings are a dark blue. Nice capture with sharp details.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Well done, Kathy. Great looking shot of the butterfly. This makes me think that I should make another trip to the Butterfly House that is about 40 miles from me. Excellent color and clarity.
