This is the eastern redbud in bloom now. In my state, Illinois, it's not supposed to grow north of Central Illinois but there are some trees here in the Chicago area. I grew up in a small town in central Illinois, Peoria, from age 2 to 13, and redbuds were everywhere. There is even a town in southwestern Illinois named Redbud. This one is along the circular driveway in front of my building. Here is some more information : "Cercis canadensis, the eastern redbud, is a large deciduous shrub or small tree, native to eastern North America from southern Michigan south to central Mexico, west to New Mexico. In the United States, this tree is difficult to grow farther west into arid areas west of western Kansas and Colorado, as there is not enough rain". (wikipedia)
