Interesting shot and yes it is different but you have overdone it with putting up the contrast..it's too washed out and I also don't like the cigarette mingling in there between the nice rocks. :)
Your approach does a good job of highlighting the ugliness of the subject. You can expect that won't be much appreciated here on Caedes, we tend towards beauty over meaning and comfort over narrative when it comes to our favoured photographic approach. (My observation only, others will probably disagree.) If someone wanted a shot to illustrate the shallowness and ego centred approach of many humans to the planet and nature, you've got the shot right here. Potent image. That's a good thing.
well i am not your average photographer, i dont look for all the normal and beauty of certain pictures. when i go out and shoot i am looking at everything around me, pretty, ugly, happy, sad. the last thing i want to do is limit my talents by shooting certain objects. i appreciate all the feedback as everyone is entitled to their own opinion of my work.there is so much out there that can be captured by a camera you just have to look for it and let your eyes and mind go. :-)
I like your narrative, especially on "Stones of Graffiti Again" and on your note above. I'm not sure what an average photographer is, and I'm not sure I agree with "Mythmaker". Personally I enjoy viewing all kinds of photos. I like to shoot landscapes, but that's probably because I live in an area that is abundant with mountains and the nearby Pacific Ocean. But I've also stopped in the slums of Los Angeles to try to get some interesting shots. By the way, if you're ever looking for "ugly", the east side of L.A. is the place to go. Just make sure that you wear a Kevlar vest.
As for this photo that I'm supposed to critique, I'd probably have given it a 4 out of 10 in the voting booth. "Stones of Graffiti Again" would have scored a 6. While content is paramount, I try to learn from the photos of the other folks on Caedes. This posting is an interesting shot. It made me wonder what, if anything, goes through a person's tiny mind before they write on a stone. This was an excellent idea for a photo, but I'm not sure that you pulled it off. It's too washed out. The shot needs saturation, a little less light and more contrast, but those are just post photo software skills that you'll pick up along the way by viewing other photos and asking people how they did what you like.
Hopefully we'll cross paths again here at Caedes. I'll tell you what I think and you can tell me what you think. You'll never see a critique from me that says "Nice Shot." I mean...what's the point of that?
thanks roger. i am still learning. im just learning through my eyes. i havent had any schooling, nor do i have any books on my camera or photography in general. i just randomly mess with my camera settings and my editing options on the computer. i dont really have much time at the moment to read up on adjustments etc since im working and in school full time. but all in all i like to take pictures that make people hit their back button on look twice. :-)
