Mythmaker's Journal (3 entries)

Golden Chengdu. Uploaded: 02/19/12 7:15 AM GMT

Image: Golden Chengdu.

No, I didn't manipulate the colours of this shot. :) Yes it is a touch soft, due to it being taken in Chengdu's ubiquitous winter mist. I lightened the shadows with the curves tool just a touch (So there is more detail there if you want to look.) but didn't want to destroy the strong contrasts between dark and light in the shot. This was directly across the road from my hotel, the Traffic Inn, which is smack in the central area of the city. All the same you can see there was a quality of stillness available from time to time. Pretty amazing for a city of over ten million. I loved it.

Enjoy.

Mikel.

Critiquing art of any kind is utterly subjective. When I vote on your images, I look at several things. First, my initial gut reaction. Then, is it straight (if it should be); is the color correct or if intentionally saturated or desaturated, was it done properly and does it enhance the image; composition - if you intended a bulls-eye, unless it's an outstanding image that is really served by centering the subject, it'll get dinged; is the horizon dead center - again, unless there's an obvious reason that makes it a better photo, no points; is the subject interesting and uncluttered; is the image sharp; is the depth of field right for this composition, is there a catchlight in the creature's eye; would I hang this on my wall; is it an image I'd be proud to display; is it artistic or just a snapshot; does it move me; is there a message conveyed; is it documentary in nature and if so, does it tell the story in such a way it makes me want more. When I critique a photo in your gallery, I'm only suggesting what my subjective nature prefers. No need to defend your position if you like your image the way it is. If you give me constructive criticism on my pieces, I guarantee you I will take them to heart. I love to improve! Bring it on Caedians! Love, anne =D

Thanks, Mikel, for the nice comments on "Afton Autumn." I appreciate it.

As someone who loves outdoor photography, I look forward to autumn each year and try to make some time to get out and get some pictures. The fall colors aren't always this vibrant. Some years, the color is a bit disappointing. It depends a lot on the weather. This year was good, but not the best I've seen. However, the weather was perfect throughout most of September and October. Most of the leaves are gone now, and the weather is turning colder. We had a storm this week the likes of which haven't been seen in this part of the country since 1975.

Thanks Mikel for your great comment on my 'Rapids of Ibrim' photo. I'm very glad you like it. Your comment much appreciated. I thought about the slight tilt of the water on the right top corner and for the sake of the composition to get the leaves and stones on the top left in a good position is more important than the slight tilt. One more thing is, before I took the photo I couldn't see this well. :( Thanks again, my friend.

Hi! Thanks for your feedback on 'Paned'. You and Tanju are right about the perspective. It's subtle, but a shift would enhance the image. I initially had more contrast but (as you said) opted for greater detail. I didn't want to sacrifice the interest of the contrasting textures in the shot. Thanks again for such a thoughtful response.
