Caedes Comment "Cred"

When you read a good comment, you may have the option of giving the author of that comment credit (or "cred") for a job well-done. This is one way that we can promote quality community discussion. Every comment on the site is eligible for cred, and the number of credits for a given comment is printed just below the comment. Next to this may be an icon of two plus signs. By clicking this icon, you can give the author credit for the comment. The icon will only appear when you are able to give cred. You have a fixed number of credits that they can given out per day, and this number is increased with the number of credits that you earn from other people for good comments.

The symbol for Caedes Cred is "∈" (e.g. 34∈). You can type this symbol into comments using the character sequence "∈".

Yeah, clever idea, great use of positive motivation and linking related desirable outcomes.

This will not change anything in my view. Now in addition to commenting on the image, we have to vote on the comments. Some don't even want to vote on the images. I certainly will not change the way I comment and what does this prove anyway?
Can I turn in my props for some kind of reward? Sorry, this just makes little sense to me.

I am sure it is optional, Jackie. I just don't see it as a motivator.
Time will tell if this has a benefit.

I think a fair psychological argument can be made that most contributors here DO have some motivation in their posting of images related to positive feedback. Consider - everyone who submits their posts to the VB do so voluntarily, the option to post your image without it going to the VB is clearly present. The regular choice to go to the VB suggests at least *some* interest in knowing what others think about our work, presumably we are not all masochists so it seems fair to suggest we hope to get a good VB result in terms of c-index. I doubt I've said anything controversial so far. Accepting that this motivation to receive positive feedback/reinforcement is present, then Caedes props concept makes sense, it offers another way for people to receive positive reinforcement and feedback, but on their analysis and commenting contributions not on their image contributions. Given how large a part of the site process and experience the "commenting" is, the props idea applies previous site principles (Peer voting.) to this fundamental dynamic of the site. The logic of it seems impeccable to me. People like positive feedback, provide a way for their comments on images to also garner positive feedback, it creates a positive feedback loop for content rich commenting.

I don't understand...Does this mean if no one votes on our comments, that means we can not comment any more? I know I'm not the best at commenting with professional words & don't have the knowledge like a lot of others here. But I like commenting & to me this seems like a slap in the face being graded on our comments and as Cindy said, it just doesn't seem to be a motivator.

This isn't a requirement. As Mikel (Mythmaker) said, it is just another way for people to easily reinforce positive behavior (like a good critique).

I like this idea because, when I am asked to comment on an image, sometimes a previous commenter has said what I want to say. This feature seems to eliminate redundancy while adding impact to widely held opinions. It also rewards those who give a lot of thought to comments rather than a quick one or two word compliment.

The props add an extra dimension to any conversation or interaction, as people don't (or don't want to) say "I agree" each and every time, but they can add a 'prop' almost as a 'ho ho ho... quite so!' and you wouldn't have been aware of their approval or amusement in the past. So I like them. :-)

Question: 'Any expiration date or time frame within to use up one's props?'

Answer: "You have a fixed number of credits that they can given out per day, and this number is increased with the number of credits that you earn from other people for good comments."

Needed to ... uh, clean me glasses. Oops.

On the note of the extra earned 'creds', though ...

If I understand this correctly, none of the extra 'creds' earned are cumulative? And must be used up in that day?

Or ...

Do they carry over and are in a way cumulative?

And no, I've not been keeping track, lol. Suppose if I was attentive enough I could answer the above question(s) myself. But, hey...

I'm a busy guy!

So how exactly do I give someone "props", or "creds" ? Do I send I send them a note or something ? Or you ? Do I click on a part of the symbol on the cred symbol by their username ?

I am not sure that this system won't reward complements in an effort to accumulate creds. I SEEK critical comments - I want to learn from those here who know photography and can help me improve. I am not sure this system will encourage that but may instead encourage complements rather than critiques.

I think it's a good idea, but I think mainly good for those who
1. WANT TRULY HONEST, HELPFUL CRITIQUE {maybe will encourage helpful critiques}.

or: 2. Those who comment just to compete in how many comments they make per day may have to be more creative..:)

{I think I am AWFUL at creative comments...and end up just saying, "cool or awesome...etc. I have decided {since limited on time, I am just gonna comment on work that really catches my eye..not every single post I see. My critiques will get low grades, but if I comment, I truly LIKE the work...{unless I otherwise say "it sucks"....hehehehe...{and I'd NEVER do that}...I'd hafta start with many of my own, :) *blushes*

So is a good comment all about the praise or is constructive criticism a good comment. all I see is people praising each other. I would would like real comments that help me with my work. That help me take better pictures. Perhaps camera settings, setup, etc.. Your thoughts on this?
2∈ [?]
I hold it true that thoughts are things; They're endowed with bodies, breath and wings: And that we send them forth to fill the world with good results, or ill. That which we call our secret thought speeds forth to earth's remotest spot, leaving it's blessings or it's woes like tracks behind it as it goes. We build our future, thought by thought for good or for ill, yet know it not. Yet so the universe was wrought . Thought is another name for fate. Choose then thy destiny and wait, for Love brings Love and Hate brings Hate. - Henry Van Dyke.
