When I saw that the theme of the next contest was "Hidden Treasures" I deliberately sought these out; for the last tow years there have only been two flower stalks from one plant on my 14 acre property and each flower is only about 8mm across at the widest point, so I thought they fit the bill. This time though I was very pleasantly surprised to find at least nine of them on several separate plants in the same spot. I'm hoping this is a sign that they are spreading; however it could just be due to good spring rains.
Anyway, for me these fit the idea of hidden treasures as I think most people would walk past them (or on them) without even noticing they were there... personally I always find it baffling that so many people seem to have no appreciation of nature, particularly that which you simply won't see elsewhere... these are called "Trigger plants" due to the fact that they catch insects via a moving part that is "triggered" when something touches the centre of the flower (in a similar manner to venus fly traps). I have seen several different varieties in Western Australia but these are the only ones I have ever seen in Victoria (probably just because I haven't looked in the right places)
