A big part of Holland or The Netherlands is laying below sea-level and has to be protected against flooding. This image shows partly this protection system. At the background a part of the 'Eastern Scheldt barrier' can be seen. It separates the North Sea from the Eastern Scheldt and is therefore the first protection sea wall. The second sea wall is the sea dike in the centre of this image, separating the Eastern Scheldt from the peninsula 'Schouwen - Duiveland'. The third sea wall (a lower dike more inland) can't been seen at this image. Think this image shows clearly that the water of the Eastern Scheldt has a far more higher level than the land behind the dike. The last time this dike broke by heavy storm and high seas, more than 1000 people at the peninsula were drowned (in Zeeland more than 1850 people). After that disaster the system was and is nowadays still improved. Think therefore our motto is: 'Luctor et Emergo' (We will struggle but shall survive).
