I wonder, how often there are contests here and if you already know, when the next one will be. I do not dream about winning it, I just want to try out the challenge to do a picture after I learn about a theme. So if anybody knows, I would really be interested in that. Thanks a lot.
One question though ... can I have some assurance that the titles given out in the past contests will be similarly available for this one?
Thought maybe I should PM *caedes about that aspect ... and ... do feel it's important to legitimize the contest in the members' eyes.
Will proceed then ... but, first ... I owe an apology to Jacqueline. (It pays to read the threads you participate on ... observe ...)
Jacqueline had suggested a macro idea earlier on on this thread, and I quote;
9/03/07 19:00
"How about guess the macro shot... "
What can I say? Great minds think alike??
No, don't answer the part that is respective to me. :oP
*starts planning 'stuff' *
Oops ... Noah ... I understand about Morat's challenge seemingly looking like it is running parallel at the same time to this suggestion ... but, it has not been formalized into a contest.

@ Cat: No ... not really. But ... I am referring specifically to the ... ahh crap ... have to find someone ... one sec ... should be easy ... I will go look in the 'contest' galleries. :oP
Here, these two ... OWotGS & HKotDA.
Need that 'carrot,' you know?
@ Rob: Welll ... er ... yeah, about that part ... lolol.
Need to work on the definition of the concept, want to ensure that the abstract artists are included. Although ... my first thought about a deep zoom ... singular aspect of a flame still has my interest. I would welcome any addtional thoughts.
I am looking at the official start to be next week, followed by a 5 - 6 week posting period, depending on how fast word gets out.
'K, ladies and gentlemen ... clean your lens ... add that RAM ... it will soon be time to start your creative engines.
(Yeah ... I know ... that last part was bad. LOL.)

For the Photographers .. A Deep Macro shot .. to rival all previous Macro Shots from the greatest of all photographers from the beginning of time .. If you have to pioneer your own technique and equipment to accomplish this .. so much the better
For the Computer Artists ... make something colorful

;-) he was looking at pics not readily available to the viewing public, perhaps. and really, have you forgotten who's AT the White House? i would be reluctant to cut to there too...

that wasn't quite what I imagine most people had in mind for a contest. I was under the impression a contest would involve the submission of images in a form of competition.

My best ? understanding of this 'contest' Rob is that there is competition.....against each other to guess the artist's name & then...well, I guess we will have to wait and see :)
This is the 4th contest of this type since I have been a member.
They were lot's of fun in the past ;=)
Sam, assuming I'm "some people", I'm stating puzzlement more so than..displeasure. Since I'm here, the only contests I'd seen were of nature I described above. so instead of indirect swipes at "some people", a reasonable explanation like Mimi offered (thank you Mimi) would've sufficed. Wouldn't you say?
Besides, if you scroll up and look at the suggestions offered, that would be apparent. I truly and honestly had been thinking the upcoming contest would be about that, and I'm guessing others had as well.

I beleive Les will still be organising his contest after the current one is over. Who knows when that will be though, at the rate we're going...maybe if more people were involved it would take less time, hint hint.
Personally I don't think I'll be organising anything else for a long time, and I think most of the mods feel the same way. We do more than our fair share already. So as I have already stated in the past, if you really want a contest that fits your requirements, the best way to ensure it happens is to organise something yourself.
I volunteer to organize a contest once the Guess the Artist one is over. If Les doesn't get there 1st w/his contest. Then I'll do the one after his?
I'd also like to see rounds of contests because there are things you can do digitally that you can't do in photography and vice versa, showing off various skill sets.
So hows about this: Bi-monthly contests. 2 Photography, 2 Digital, 2 Mixed per year?
May I also suggest that if a mod or 2 has gotten burnt/discovered a life that needs attention, or otherwise is no longer able to function in that capacity, they be allowed to honorably retire or take a sabbatical? I presume they'd be allowed continued access to the senate floor, and maybe some new title could be created for them to show time well served?

Well ... implementing a formal calendar of events would be great ... however ...
That may be putting the horse before the cart though Cat. You would have to ensure that the personnel would be in place for the successive ones in the coming years.
Ok, walking on eggshells here a tad ...
It's one thing to have some time pass, because life does happen ... and not have a contest ... but, entirely different if it is carved in stone ... and then it doesn't come to fruition.
In my mind, that situation would lessen the credibility of the site in general and cast aspersions onto the management.
I did receive some positive feedback on the macro idea and believe it is not only a viable one, but could challenge both photographers and abstract artists.
But, by all means ... if you have something in mind and it garners more support ... I am all for it.
I just happened to key in on what had not been conducted in the past. The macro category seems to be of interest and it would give that gallery a boost as well.
And I have to acknowledge Morat here. His assignment challenge that he initiated also clued me into this possibility.
Here is a synopsis of what I have so far as to the breakdown:
Three categories.
1) Best Technical Shot.
2) "Caedes Obscura." - Best macro disguised object item. (Yes, I took some 'artistic' licence, if you will, from the form Camera Obscura.)
3) Abstract Interpretation. Singular aspect of an abstract or flame. (And perhaps have the artists post the overall composition and then the 'macro' render.)
And then ... judging by a group of peers as it has been done in the past.
No worries though ... the master of deception and misdirection; Mr. GTA will keep the membership going for a bit on the current contest. ;o)
I think .. occasionally .. but I think some contests could be annual events .. I think MACRO fits into this "cone of silence" .. because it pushes most photographers out of their comfort zone.
that being .. "standing up, pointing a camera, and pushing a button"
and time spent "pushing the envelope" is time spent learning ..
and, someday, when they are a world famous MACRO photographer, they will say .. "I owe it all to that guy, what was his name? that guy at that site, oh dear, I've forgotten the name of the site now .. but it was them guys on the web that inspired me to achieve greatness
Howabout submit a techincally perfect image (following a list of certain guidelines that a person named noah will make) but make it as ugly as possible...like hideous...something that sum1 wouldnt even call 'art'. :)
In this case, when we vote, voters vote for the worst image...not the best.
I've moved the winning images from those older contests into new "contest" galleries. I'm also trying to get some of the missing winning images restored. Got about three reponses already so most of them should be back soon.
Personally I can't think of another more noticable place to put the contest announcements... they aren't galleries, more like news items. Maybe we could add a link in the gallery descriptions... I like that idea. But then how many people actually read those...

Whenever ... after Terri's contest has completed ... Cat has had a shot at her ideas ... whichever and whatever ... are you sitting down for this? You better be ... 'cause it's original and never been done in the history of the site and is OPEN TO ALL GENRES of art readily and easily. Ready?
"Transportation - Movement through Space".
!! Ta da !!
*faints ... once again*
I ... really ... really need to cut back on the 'nog. :o\
And give it up peeps for the guy above me, his recent images sparked my most absolutelyawesomefreakiness idea here !!
p.s. Tip of the hat as well to our very own Keith Douglas; aka KEIFER. :o)
I'm just tossing out some ideas for future contests ~ some of them might seem mundane & may work well for photography only, but would like it to include all artistic genres.
Symmetry
Shadows
Silhouettes
Textures
Black & White (would love to see this one)
Numbers ~ similar objects or subjects in numbers (one image) ~ example : the number 3 would be the theme (or can include the specific number only). One may be amazed what they can find while out & about.
Curves ~ look around you ~ there are plenty of subjects with curves whether it is of nature, man made, or people. Get creative!
Twisted ~ another one much like "curves".
Negative Space ~ this is totally minimalistic. Could be interesting.
Looking Through ~ a doorway, window, archway, fence, etc. where the main subject is in view.
Waterworks ~ water is everywhere & is wide open for possibilities. If the possibilities don't present themselves get creative.
The End ~ lots of interpretation with this one . The possibilities are "endless". I like it!
The Meaning of Life (my favorite) ~ I think this one could very well include all ~ photography, abstract/fractal, CG, & illustration. It would be a fun one open to interpretation ~ what is the artist trying to convey in the image?
Passage of Time or like Les mentioned "Transportation ~ Movement through Space". Lots of creativity presents itself for all genres.
If some don't work ~ how about a monthly challenge????
Just read through this thread and another on the same subject, namely 'contests'. And then referenced the contests already been held. Believe the "Light and Dark" one that was run in the past covered this 'theme' already.
Not to say that another could not be held. Perhaps, a refinement of the idea/concept then?
For me, I like that the fact that this might ... once again ... push the creative envelopes of some of the artists on the site here.
Annnnd ... extrapolating a bit ... I see possibilities with the whole spectrum of colours. Individually. "Green" ... "Red" ... and so forth, where that colour has to be dominant or at the bare minimum, the focal subject should appear in pursuit of the particular colour.
I dare say, that given what you have posted on this thread here Sherree ... surely out of those choices/suggestions ... one could emerge.
Cross reference those with the contests already run ... new and unique seems to be key ... and then refine the concept/idea. 'We' can then forward that to *caedes for his consideration.
Sound like a plan?
I would be more than willing to assist. Perhaps, check with Cat to see where she is sitting on her contest idea first as a courtesy.
I have a contest idea ready to run, (not any of the above suggestions amazingly enough! 8•P) previously I was waiting for Les' contest to run when he had it in the works last year. Les, if you don't want to run forward with that one, I'll start my other now and we can keep these ideas here as the basis for the another new one say 1 or 2 months after mine ends?
Inasmuch as the macro idea is a good one, I think and given some of the feedback received ... "The Nano World Around Us"(?), the precursor as it turns out to mine ... is close, thematically.
That said, since there seems to be some members who are willing to assist ... perhaps, 'we' could formulate a schedule of sorts and have a few ready to go next go rounds.
I also took a glance at previous contests. My idea of "Waterworks" is basically the same as the "Moving Water" Contest. So that one should probably be excluded.
Cat ... I will be looking forward to the new contest. ;-)
Funnily enough while I was waiting for Les' contest to go forward Terri jumped in and started one in the member-initiated projects. LOL
If contests are old enough, I wouldn't worry about repeating themes - certainly they are good ideas and new members would be able to participate. I agree we should look for "fresh" ideas 1st though. 8•)
You choose a couple ... we'll refine a news announcement etc., etc, ... etc..
'Black & White', if asked ... would be my current choice as well for number one heading the list.
What I had done, is looked at the wording and past announcements of previously held contests to provide an acceptable template of sorts for new ones. Certain elements are common, of course. Such as deadline, entry limit requirements and so forth.
Sketch out a few, compare notes. No rush, or if you are motivated and have the time now ... no worries.
Cat's should be good good. Terri's was a great one too. Bit more publicity was needed in my humble opinion. It was, however, a great concept and theme.
I like all the contest ideas surfacing in this thread - I did not realize they were here, as previously the discussion had mostly been "what contests are coming up?... dunno, how about you?" and I had given up looking. :-). Maybe we should start a new thread titled 'Contest Suggestions' (or rename this one).
My favourites of recent suggestions are:
Curves
Twisted
Looking Through
The Meaning of Life
I agree with Animaniactoo that it doesn't matter if we repeat old themes... I wasn't around for any of them :O), and those lucky folks who entered them the first time round should have new material and new ideas by now. I like the old 'dream' contest - could that be added to the list for another go?
I have a new idea of my own that Purmusic (Les) suggested I bring here, and that's a Haiku contest. Entrants could write their own haikus and create a wallpaper to match. The idea came up when I was looking at this old haiku thread in the Offtopic section.
The beauty of that for a contest theme is that there would be no limit on wallpaper subjects... whatever your own personal interest is, be it flowers, animals, architecture, fractals, space, sports... you just write the haiku to match, and the wallpaper qualifies for the competition.
As this is a predominantly wallpaper site, I don't think we have to be wonderful poets to try this - it's just for fun. ;-)
"I like all the contest ideas surfacing in this thread - I did not realize they were here, as previously the discussion had mostly been "what contests are coming up?... dunno, how about you?" and I had given up looking. :-)."
Well, not anymore. :o)
"Maybe we should start a new thread titled 'Contest Suggestions' (or rename this one)."
For now, and to keep things at least centralized ... think this thread will do fine Tootles.
Just read through your above post and forgive me for playing devil's advocate here ... as a formalized contest for the site, some ground rules for submissions and more importantly, judging would have to be considered beforehand, methinks.
True, 'we' need not be poets to write a Haiku ... however, for the sake of debate ... what or how would the winner be declared? Best imagery period? Best match of poem and imagery? There is where I see the stumbling block, so to speak, as mentioned to you before in one of our exchanges on this topic.
As a member initiated project? Sure, post your concept up and see if it garners any interest.
As a formalized contest? Hmm, again ... I think it needs to be fine tuned. And I am aware that you wished to express the idea and see if anyone else picks up on it ... so, a friendly bump ... to the top. :o)
If I may, a previously held contest, as mentioned to you in our e-dialogues... namely; "In Print" ... might be the way to go. Limiting the interpretation and interpolating of the judging aspect.
"Think what a better world it would be if we all, the whole world, had cookies and milk about three o'clock every afternoon and then lay down on our blankets for a nap." - Robert Fulghum
Thanks for the friendly bump, Les - LOL! (Rubs bruise).
What is the difference between a formalized contest and a member-initiated project? We are all members, and either way it would take place here on Caedes.net? People might end up taking either type of event quite seriously.
I like the look of the In Print competition and it would be fun to run again, but doesn't mean a haiku contest couldn't be had as well. :-)
I would see there being at least two categories (maybe more), and they would include best haiku, and best wallpaper.
Tootles, in a member-initiated contest, the member who initiates the contest must decide the contest (hopefully something that covers all genre of art), the rules, the number of posts allowed per contestant, and decide on the prizes (if any).
They also must be prepared to be 'available' online to answer questions (and there will be ton's of them) that will arise from the artists.
Then, they would need to arrange for judges to judge the entries (cannot be anyone who entered it ,usually), notify all judges via PM and then tally all the votes, notify the winners and post them.
A formalized contest? You (Tootles) can enter your drawing or do nothing :=).....all of the above is handled by *caedes.
Hope this helps!
PM me if you have more questions :)

Please, even if you don't visit my gallery, check out my "Faves".I've left them intact since day "1", and would like it if every image there got the attention they deserved.

How about "The Strange and Bizarre" and Title must Fit the Image.
There's a Lot of Strange and Bizarre subjects down here. LOL.
Are how 'bout "That Title Really Fits" . There's also a Lot of Titles here. LOL !
