The current (Negative Space) contest is over and we all anxiously await the results...it's unlikely there'll be another one for awhile, though we all enjoy them for the attention to detail, originality, and creativity they promote...with that in mind then, plus some of the heated discussion threads recently, it seemed a good time to initiate a challenge or invitation of sorts...borrowing from one of the groups over at Red Bubble, I'd like to suggest the posting of some images that illustrate the feeling of stillness, quiet, peacefulness, calm... where the mood is subtle yet unmistakable...where stillness speaks...
All members and genres eligible and welcome to participate...limit images submitted to two only...preferably new, not previously posted images, though that need not be strictly adhered to if you feel there is currently something in your gallery that fits the theme well...
Any wishing to participate, please post a link to your image(s) on this thread OR if you don't know how to create a link then post the title of your image(s) here so we know where to find them in your gallery...
I am setting a deadline of Monday, April 6th and will not be participating myself...
Depending on the number of those that do participate, I may (?) after the deadline is over, invite some other active members on the site who have also chosen not to join in, to aid in the determination of the top 3 images that best fit the criteria...keeping in mind the COC of course...
This is NOT a formal contest...there will be NO prizes awarded...nope, not a darn thing...and I'll admit, the theme not overly unique...just something to shoot for, a little recognition for your efforts, and maybe if we're lucky, some of the subject matter will spill over and restore some of the friendly atmosphere this site is known for...anyone interested?...it starts NOW!
I'm housebound at the moment, so can't get out to capture new photos for Pat's Challenge, but this earlier image of the Contemplative Garden at my local cemetary/park is a lovely place for quiet reflection.
Btw, did I say how much I'm enjoying this challenge ? Because I really love minimalism & I wish we had a minimalism gallery ! Not only that, I wish we had a minimalism gallery for both photography & abstracts too !
Well...I see Owd Bob has shown up...with Jackie and Anne-Marie on each arm...and all bearing more gifts of visual imagery...*waves Hi to all*...thanks for coming!
Boy, the way this thing is going it's almost turning into another Woodstock event...a whole bunch of people who just wanna' sit around day-dreaming, meditating, and flashing peace signs all over the place, lol...I may have to revise my original thinking on all this...so for that I'm off again to find some 'peace and quiet', leaving a couple more relaxing melodies...

*taps microphone...tries to be cool in light of what may be disappointing news to some...coughs*
Ummm...as I mentioned in my very last comments above, I've been giving this whole thing some thought...needless to say, I am thrilled with the level of interest in this challenge...it turned out much bigger than I expected...already there are alot of participants and LOTS of submissions and likely more to come....therefore, I can't help but think that my original allowance of unlimited entries was waaay too generous...I think you'd all agree, at this rate, this thing will get too big and take on a life of its' own...making voting very difficult and hard to manage...
So...much as I hate to do it...I think it's become necessary to 'tame this beast' somewhat and make a couple of revisions...
I am therefore requesting that we limit our submissions to TWO ONLY and while I do want to allow adequate time for any late-comers, I am moving the DEADLINE up a few days to Monday, APRIL 6th...hoping this will help and this message will get out and everyone can see the logic and need for this...thanks for your understanding.
Hey Pat, I do understand, this has gone over so well and has been very fun and enlightening. Kudo's on a fine idea that went over so well. =^..^= sandi ♪
Sure Pat, I completely understand and request that you remove Reflections, Summer Relaxation, Early November on the Creek, and Ghosts on the Water. That should get me down to two. That is two more than I would have had if you had not set this up for everyone so I am very happy to comply. If I could do anything else, just let me know. Thanks ~~ John
Good idea, Pat. Lyn, I removed yours from the master list I had done per your request...John, perhaps you could go back to your entry abovr and edit it to reflect the ones you waant in the contest so when Pat or myself or whoever does the next master list knows easilt which ones you want in ?
Thanx again, Pat, for this wonderful idea, and it's great to see all the participation here!
Thanks for your understanding, everyone...you see, this is why in the real contests caedes limits us to only 2 entries...'cause he has a brain in that eye and I don't, lol...
Thanx a ton Pat for the help with the LINK thing. Gosh I wish I could understand HOW to do it. I keep trying, but for some reason, I just don't get it. Maybe there is someone who could post an EASY tutorial for it? that would be so great. Thanx again. Verena
This challenge is going across very well and people have lots of images that could fit; maybe some time when it's too quiet or turbulent again, we could have a Stillness Speaks II. :-)
Thanks John...and also for your offer to help...atm, everything seems under control but I'll keep you in mind if something comes up...
Thanks Mimi for spotting that image of johindes and posting the link...if anyone else spots one where the person didn't know to post a link here, please let them know or post a link for them...don't want to miss anyone...yes, I like a few of Enya's songs...she has a beautiful voice...
Tootles...maybe we'll do this again sometime...but I think there are others on the site who have some ideas in mind too...a Theme of the Week being one...
Well, I better get back to work for now...thankfully it's a fairly quiet day...a good one for day-dreaming, hehe....so on that note, a couple more tunes for you...
Hi Pat...would you mind getting rid of my two "peace" posting, named TOTAL PEACE and MOUNTAIN STREAM and replacing them with
these two: BENCH SPOT and SOFT CLOVER SCENE. Thank you so much.V
Ok Verena, I edited the post above...I think I got the right ones?
Just a reminder to everyone, in case my post above abit was missed...the revised deadline is now Monday, April 6th and a limit of 2 entries only, please and thank-you...voting will then start April 7th...more details on that soon.
Yup, I got the point about the two postings, that's why I had you xchange those others. Thanx a ton, hope it all goes well, it's been nice fun to do this. V
Thanks, Adriana...Mimi "...I give you Yanni.."?...I'll take him! lol...very nice...and the music is too...really quite beautiful ...thank-you for bringing it for us...
And...I see by the trail of cookie crumbs my fellow countryman arrived awhile ago...Hi Les! welcome to our 'shindig'...is that really you in that image or some kind of morph?...very intriguing eyes...I don't know why but for some reason I had always pictured you as a combination of THIS and THIS...glad to see you are connected again...er...more or les...
Pat, could you please remove my "Zen Garden" from the running ? I've decided that my "The Dharma Gate" really has that certain feeling of stillness more so then Zen Garden, as well as Timestream. Thanks hon ! I can't wait to see how this turns out, all the entries are fantastic, as well as everyone's interpretations !
Okey dokey, Lauren...yeah, I'm getting kinda' curious too...I'm hoping to have this whole thing wrapped up by Thursday, April 9th with voting results in and the 'closing ceremonies' lol.

Thanks Jackie, gaeljet2, and Mimi for the links...just did a quick check and it looks like everyone is now down to 2 or less...speaking of Les, isn't he something...calling me Chatty...the Master Himself, lol.

Thanks guys...maybe instead of everyone giving an ok here just let me know if there's a problem with the link or the wrong image was listed, after the confusion with unlimited submissions and some having to be removed...I'll leave the list up there awhile to give all a chance to have a look...at present there's 46 images here and something like 29 people participating, if I counted right...the deadline is Monday, April 6...12 midnight my time, which would be 9 p.m. on the west coast...voting will be open starting April 7th...more final details on that soon.
To those participating in this challenge...some VOTING DETAILS:
Voting will start as of Tuesday, April 7th as soon as I put up the final and complete list of linked images...
Mimi has generously offered to help in the processing of those votes...
The vote is NOT open to all caedes members...Mimi and I would be so swamped we'd never be heard from again...
The vote IS open to all those participating here but strictly optional if you prefer not to vote...I would only ask that if you do not plan to vote to send me a PM so we know not to wait for you...
Voting will be via PM's either to myself or Mimi, confidentiality assured...
You will be allowed to vote for the TWO images (only) that you like the best and feel fit the theme of the challenge as you interpret it, supplying the titles of those two images in your PM...you are, of course, to exclude your own...it is NOT necessary to put your choices in order of preference...the numbers should sort themselves out as the results come in...
A word of caution...once you have sent a PM naming your 2 choices, you CANNOT change your mind...you can imagine the confusion that could cause...so make your choices carefully and thoughtfully...
I am hoping, with a little luck, that the votes will come in quickly and we can have the results and wrap this up by Thursday, April 9th...however, it may not turn out that way as some do not log onto the site or visit this thread as often as others, plus with Easter coming, some may have preparations or plans to consider...in that case, I am setting a deadline on the vote for Sunday, April 12th, 12 midnight my time, 9 p.m. on the west coast and with results coming hopefully by Monday, April 13th...
I think that pretty well covers everything unless someone can think of something I may have missed or a problem with the above arrangements...
Just a few days left for those who are still planning to join the challenge but haven't done so yet...
If anyone notices any errors or omissions on the list just above abit please let me know asap...we don't want to miss any...but I think it's correct and up-to-date...
I'll be in and out over the weekend to check on things...meantime I have a date with THE TRAVELING WILLBURYS
B....y hell no time enough !!!
But all my images are speaking stillness - OK some not that much ...
No time so I will be late as always.
[presently translating the liposuction procedure ggggrrrr]
And more wonderful entries have shown up...compliments of Pierre and Elizabeth...welcome guys...I have added those links to the list and we are now at 48 images, comparable to 4 pages of thumbnails...way to go caedes!
My little tribute or addition to the mellow music..Little sad but My kids love the movie and the music makes me think of times gone by when things were different. I hope you enjoy Our Town.
Well…just a few hours left for any last-minute participants who still want to join our challenge and have their images on the ‘voting list’. The deadline is TODAY, Monday, April 6th, 12 midnight EDT or 9 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time. At that time the challenge closes and sometime shortly after that the complete and final list of images eligible for voting on will be posted at the bottom of this thread and voting will begin sometime early Tuesday.
Voting will take place via PM either to Mimi or myself…hopefully we’ll get a balanced share but if it turns out one of us becomes too over-loaded an announcement would then be posted asking that any further votes just go to one of us. There’s also a deadline for voting, Easter Sunday, April 12th, 12 midnight EDT or 9 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time…so we’re not waiting indefinitely for the results…votes after this date won’t be counted.
Sorry that the voting will be a bit more cumbersome than usual…going back and forth from the thread to links…it’s the only way it could be done.
Participants of this challenge ARE allowed to vote…some may not be aware of this so your help in ‘spreading the word’ to others would again be appreciated. Remember…one PM (only) voting for two titles of images, other than your own, that you like best…and that’s not one PM to Mimi and one to me either…uh uh…the accounting firm of Mimi & Me are pros and we’ll catch ‘ya, lol…catchy name eh?
An announcement of the results will be made on this thread when they are final so check back every now and then. While waiting, you are invited, unless otherwise engaged, to enjoy the musical entertainment sprinkled throughout the thread above…just a few tunes, broadly interpreted to fit the mood and theme…hopefully something to suit all tastes.
Finally, a small favor…once the list of linked images is posted on the bottom of this thread, I would ask that we temporarily try to limit or refrain from posting any comments below the list…just until the results are in…that way it’s quick and easy to spot and avoids any confusion scrolling way up to find it.
That’s it then…I’m off for awhile to practice my reading and math skills…be back later…a ‘friend’ of mine here to entertain you for a bit…
with HARVEST MOON
Me neither, wow. But, in the interest of ... interesting, I happen to think we need something a little different in the way of tunes around here, something a little more interesting.
We don’t make art to show someone what something looks like. All this requires is eyes (or a lens). Art is supposed to have meaning, emotion, power, or magic. Alan & Mario "FourThirds"

****************GOOD-LUCK TO EVERYONE***************
I have to say I've seen some really great pieces here. While some of the ones I liked didn't say "stillness" to me (they made me feel more awake, and excited) there was certainly a plethora of creativity that went into the shooting/creating of these images. Nicely done :o)
Please, even if you don't visit my gallery, check out my "Faves".I've left them intact since day "1", and would like it if every image there got the attention they deserved.
*with paper in hand, rushes in excitedly…crosses large stage to microphone, looks out over a gathering crowd*
Ahem…Ladies and Gentlemen, can I have your attention, please…the votes have been counted and the results are in! While all of your votes are held in the strictest of confidence, I CAN tell you it was a VERY tight race to the finish. I know you are all anxious to hear the outcome of this challenge, so without further delay…I am pleased to announce, according to the number of votes received, the names of the THREE top-placing images and their creator …*drum roll*
Coming in as the 3rd place runner up, the winner is CONTEMPLATIVE GARDEN (aka Springtime Snow) by Anne-Marie (Papi11on ) *applause*
And the 2nd place runner up is SUNRISE KAUAI by Jen (jeenie11) *applause*
And now, coming in FIRST place with the MOST number of votes received, the winner is *another drum roll* GOLDENPATH TOO by John (casechaser)!
* applause, cheers, and wolf whistles all over the place*
Yes indeed, your applause is most deserving. CONGRATULATIONS to the 3 top-placing participants! Quite an achievement given the stiff competition, the number of entries, and the rather loosely structured theme of the challenge…and, I suspect with all those whistles, some of you may still have Jen’s ‘other’ entry in mind as well, hehe.
At this point, I would like to mention that I did not vote but after the 3 winners were determined, I reserved for myself the unique privilege of naming an additional 3 images worthy of Honorable Mention. These were NOT chosen based on the number of votes received but because for me, in one way or another, they stood out from the rest. When I first started this challenge, I had a vague notion in the back of my mind of some things I’d personally be watching for…perhaps something minimal, or something that whispered ‘stillness’ or ‘quiet’ without benefit of title or description, and definitely something that might be different from the others.
So, in no particular order of preference then…
The first is by someone who entered two images that both gave me reason to pause and consider, and while I often favor the darker color choices, this time I chose the one with the soft, neutral shades, the ‘gentle on my mind’ appeal, and with just the slightest suggestion of some slow, soothing motion….ADRIFT, LOST TO DREAM IN A TIMESTREAM by Lauren (laurengary)…*applause*
My next choice was for an image that immediately struck me with a deeper and more profound sense of the words ‘stillness’ and ‘peace’…captured in a location often associated with those words, taken as the sun was closing another day, and while unnecessary to the atmosphere, a moving narrative with the solemn reminder of those to whom we owe much for a certain peace we all cherish…that of course, was SILENT STILLNESS by Rich (rp64)… *applause*
And now, with only one left, I can’t tell you how tempted I was to allow myself a couple more choices…a few images were seriously competing…but since I made it tough for you, I remained disciplined and chose one final image for its’ minimalism, unmistakable stillness, and the memory of a day when I too watched for some time and at some distance, something that was so motionless in a pond that I wasn’t sure if it was a branch or a bird…until it finally moved and I knew…now you do too…PATIENCE by EJ (100k_xle)
*applause*
To the rest of you who participated…it is perhaps to you collectively that we owe the greatest tribute …had you not shown up AND in the numbers that you did, this would have been pretty much of a non-event…that you did made it a greater success than I would’ve imagined…furthermore, all of you brought something relevant to the theme and enjoyable to view…something we can all relate to in one way or another…
Thank-you…Bravo…Well Done! … *waits for applause to subside*
I would now ask that you hold any further applause until the completion of my closing remarks. After that, any wishing to make acceptance speeches or add further comments are welcome to do so.
There are some special people I’d like to acknowledge…
Mimi, who was quick to contact me the moment she discovered what I’d gotten myself into here, offering bits of advice along the way, and in the end, playing a role in the voting process…thank-you so much…hugs…
Thank you also to Rich for some sound advice on a couple of things and for constructing and re-constructing lists of linked images…a cumbersome task and his time and efforts spent on that are recognized and much appreciated.
Much appreciation also to those who helped spread the word of what we were doing here, by various links throughout the site and by word of mouth…you also helped a lot to make it a success…thank-you!
Finally, a personal ‘Thank-You’ to all of you for participating. I had never initiated a challenge here before…really didn’t know what to expect…but in the end, I am quite happy how everything turned out.
Was it as good for you as it was for me? *snickers….winks*
No, all kidding aside, I do hope that with so many troubles in the world, we at least found something meaningful and peaceful in what we all did here.
And with that in mind, let’s remember those we know who may not be enjoying much peace of mind at present and keep them in our thoughts and prayers.
So that’s it from me…give yourselves a BIG round of applause…
Congratulations everyone! You all submitted such wonderful entries and everything went along so well in such a fine and cooperative manner right down to the vote. That was due to Pat's attention to the details and to her wonderful motivational skills and to the enthusiasum of the community too. Thanks, Pat! That's a great monologue you just delivered! Applause, applause! Congratulations winners all!
First of all, I would like to add my voice to all the others and thank you (Pat),Mimi, and Rich for coming up with this idea and for all of the hard work you put into it. You gave us a well organized and exciting contest. Thank you!
Congrats also to all of the participants. I know I found it very difficult to narrow down the list to just the ones I wished to nominate. There were just so many excellent entries to pick from.
I am thrilled that my picture did well. I am humbled and honored by it. I do wish to thank everyone here at Caedes for this recognition.
Now, I must prepare for my victory run up and down the sidewalks while screeming "I won, I won..."
Until, of course, the proper authorities arrive to remove me and place me back into my padded room.
Congratulations to all winners and entrants for making this challenge so successful. And Pat, a hearty well done with your efforts for inspiring and in involving so many!
lol John! I'm running up and down those aisles with you cheering cause you won! A very deserved win! congratulations to all winners and to everyone who took part - I was happy to see something constructive and so many people participating....and thank you Pat for all your hard work - I think you will have gathered that it was appreciated by a lot of people! .....now ....more challenges please - anyone brave enough to set one up??? ;) Px

I would agree with some of those that have commented on how difficult it was to pick just 2 out of all the wonderful entries. Congrats to all the winners and Pat - thanx for the kind asides in both Honorable Mention and about helping where I could. Really, I did so very little, Pat and Mimi were the masterminds behind this one! Nicely done and thanx for the efforts and hard work.
Holy smokes ! Thanks so much for the Honorable Mention Pat ! I most definitely cannot believe it ! Thank you sooo much hon ! *hug*A fractal, placing in a contest or challenge, here on Caedes, amazing. Thank you again for the Honorable Mention Pat, I'm honestly & sincerely thrilled that you liked Timestream so much. ;-)
And to be honest, I was able to pick out one image right off the bat, but to pick out a second one ..... !!! It was tough. Anyway, congratz to the winners & way to go to Rich & EJ !!!
Thank you so much Pat for doing this challenge it was definitely fun. ;-)
First I would like to take a minute to Thank the Academy and it's Members......WHAT? Oh,..... sorry wrong Award. LOL.
Big Thanks To Pat, Mimi and Rich for all their work on this impromptu contest. There were so many Great Images to choose from. But I think that John's Image was certainly One of the Best. Congratulations to John, Jen, Ann-Marie, Lauren, and Rich.

Congratulations to the winners.. all very deserving of the awards..
To the 3 stooges.. oops i mean to Pat Mimi & Rich.. a job well done, it was a great idea, and fantastic to see how many participated... *claps... yeah!!!*
The 3 stooges eh, lol...say, that gives me an idea...............for another time..........Mimi & Me, Inc. the umbrella company for all kinds of stuff will be back again in the future...til then, I DO encourage others who have some ideas floating around to give it a shot...it needn't have all the greetings, music, and voting if you'd prefer to keep it simpler...I just did that to try and add a little more fanfare to the whole thing...either way, we do love the challenges, contests, barbecues, campfires etc. around here...it keeps things fun and active on the site and I also think it helps to keep all of us on our toes as to what we ourselves and others are uploading and that's always a good thing...so I'll be watching to see what pops up...meantime, glad y'all enjoyed this one...cheers!
Congratulation Shads for being the Top Dog. You deserved it. All the winners are to be congratulated for their insight and the workers behind the scene that put this together deserve a round of applause. Good going Ceades members.
Oh my word! I'm very honoured to have made third place among so many superb images. What a lovely surprise. Thank you very much indeed to those who voted for my entry.
And of course, especial thanks to Pat, Mimi & John for organising this challenge. It's been fascinating looking at everyone's interpretation of Stillness.
Many congratulations to John on your winning image - an absolute delight - and to Jen for your glorious sunrise.
Congratulatins to the deserving winners, and many thanks to all who organized the whole thing - espaecially Pat!

Sorry to be so late on the congrads. This was a great idea and lots of fun. Those that placed really stood out with their images as did the honorable mentions. I want to thank the wonderful people behind this and again it was alot of fun.

Congrat's to all the winners & honorable mentions. I had planned on entering this competition, but life in general became very hectic & demanding for me. I did enjoy browsing through all the entries as it was my escape (each day) for a moment of peace, quiet, & stillness. So, a well done to everyone that entered.
A big thanks to Pat for taking the time to organize this challenge ... also thanks to Mimi & Rich.
