A sinkhole appeared overnight in May, 2015 at Johnny Morris', Top of the Rock Golf Course in Branson, MIssouri. They are busy excavating hoping to find a hidden cave system and perhaps other entrances to other caves in the area. I took this photo while visiting my son this summer.

The sinkhole now has a name. It is called "Cathedral of Nature," and Johnny Morris, founder of Bass Pro, is planning a new lodge that will sit on the edge of the sinkhole. You can see a portion of the planned site in the top left corner of this photo. I have photos of just the Rock Formations in the sinkhole, but decided to use this one for perspective. You can read more about it here and here, or watch a video here.

I found this to be very unusual and plan on using it for the current contest.

I have a strong feeling you'll do well with it in the contest, too! It is most unusual. It would be a difficult hole for the golf course, however, how would you lay up on it for the put? lol.

looking at the rock formations along the distant edge, in the middle, there appears to be a sloping walkway from the reddish gravel down into the pit. Is that what it is? A means of touring these formations? I thought the biggest concern about sinkholes is that they are unpredictable. That being said, I'd suspect the developer is taking a chance building a structure at the edge of it. Unusual, indeed.

Owd Fella Tick (OFT), this is a very interesting post (image and narrative with links). Not only a perfect entry for the photojournalism gallery but it would be a very unusual contribution for the Unusual contest as well.
If you would decide for the latter, I wish you Good Luck with it!
S+F. Thanks for sharing it, 👍 !

Superb Tick, I don't think it's such a good idea building a structure of any kind close to it, how do they know more could not open up? Tigz=^..^=

Wow! that's quite a sink hole...looks like a whole ancient city could be unearthed down there...don't think I'd want to build anything on top of that...super shot and fantastic entry for both the contest and the photojournalism gallery...best of luck.
