Pistachios are dioecious, meaning that there are female trees and male trees. Since each is stuck forever in one spot, they can never get together to make those little nuts. That's where the bees come in, visiting first the male shown here, then the much less showy female.

Bees are showing a dramatic decline as you know David. Pistachios are a favourite munch of mine and this is a wonderful shot.
Well done.

And pistachio lovers should be concerned over what's been happening to the bee population in the past ten years. In fact, people who love food should be concerned, since the bee figures greatly in how nearly all grown foodstuffs are pollinated by bees. Another plant that is dioecious is the Juniper tree. Look for a Juniper with white berries... that's the female. As to your photo, it's top-drawer in color and focus and interest. Bees are hard to capture because they seldom are still while flying. Your shutter speed perfectly got the body tack-sharp and enough blur in the wings to show movement. Very nice, indeed.

A good shot and the bees are definitely on the decline. Too bad.

You really did a good job on the action, and the bokeh is very good.
