This is my thumb...... and while I was in Utah visiting Sues family a few years ago we saw this dragonfly on the lawn. He wasn't very active otherwise we wouldn't be looking at him like this:):) He eventually flew away:) Enjoy:):)

Excellent macro (with great details), Bruce.
Think it was tired and therefore has searched for a 'suitable' landing place, ☺ .
Although passive now, it's a good action shot, Buddy!

Totally awesome! Love to have that happen to me. I have to sneak up on them. Super catch and nice details at close range while juggling the camera routine.

Was it perhaps a little chilly, Bruce? At this time of year it's often easier to photograph some kinds of bugs if it's below their temperature comfort zone. That's the only reason I was able to macro-shoot two butterflies a few weeks back, from less than 3 inches away. It was just before sunrise and the night air had dropped into the 40's. They were literally frozen, but I digress. This is an excellent shot because you were able to be close enough to get all of him in focus and your thumb provides not only the size ratio of the 'fly but the fact that they're often not too concerned with humans. Personally, they are tied with the mantis as my favorite insect, partly because of their coloring but more so because they eat mosquitos, perhaps the most unnecessary insect God ever created (I think He was pissed at Adam the day He did that). When I was a kid I found a dead dragonfly whose wingspan measured nearly a foot across. It wasn't until I was working with paleontologist, many years later, that I discovered their wingspans averaged 6 feet in width, 6 to 10 million years ago... I'm guessing it would have required your entire hand to hold that one up.

Happy Trails

Exceptional macro detail Bruce.
We have a large dragonfly species in New Zealand called Kapokapowai. I would love to get this close to one !

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust
