I was going through some old photos yesterday and rescanned some that my father took when he was in the Army during WWII. He was in the 101st Airborne division and as some may know they were the inspiration for the HBO series "Band of Brothers." He was also in Bastogne which was one of the most pivotal conflicts of the war. I have no idea what this image is but I am assuming it was overseas; maybe Belgium? I think my father is the one in the back. I'm not sure what they are celebrating. Taken sometime around 1944?

A cool vintage photo, Alex, and a nice memento for you of your father...I also like the sepia tones.

My father was a marine in the Pacific, whose M.O.S. was that of forward observer, sneaking amongst the Japanese to determine and report their locations to arty. Sheesh! I am actually lucky to just be here. This is a cool photo for a memorial to your dad. My father-in-law was in the Bulge aa well but I have never seen personal photos of his like this. The foam in the big jug the guy in front is lifting tells me it has to be homemade beer.

Alex, I agree with 'Nik'. Think that this image wasn't taken in France, else your father and his colleagues had undoubtedly consumed French wine. Because of the froth, it could be a homemade Belgian beer (brewed in a local brewery). Think that you already know that Belgian beer is famous because of the different (almost uncountable) varieties and taste.
Think that that they aren't celebrating too. One must realize that the allied troops were the liberators in this part of Europa too.
Despite that the Belgian people were suffering from hunger and scarcity, there was 'plenty' of beer. For the Belgians an excellent opportunity to show their gratitude towards their liberators.
If you consider this background, realize that you have a unique time document in your possession. Worth being cherished, my friend!

The reason why the sun sets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB
