Every evening after a day sea fishing hundreds of these Spotted Shags congregate on this disused wharf. Spotted Shags or Parekareka (Phalacrocorax punctatus) are a species of Cormorant found only in New Zealand.
Sumpter Wharf in Oamaru harbour is unsafe with many of its piles decaying. It was built in 1894 and was used by large oceangoing freighters running between New Zealand and Britain. The sailing ship Dunedin, carrier of New Zealand’s first shipment of frozen meat left from here in 1890 and British tramp ships loaded grain during the Boer War.
It is estimated it would cost $1.5 million to restore it for the safety of pedestrians following a survey in 2011. The cost of demolition is also high so in the meantime the Parekareka enjoy it safe from humans, except for photographers craning their necks round the barriers :)

Wowie there are so many of them, this is such good group capture, and the composition is perfect. I bet it's kind of noisy as well. :)

Even if the jetty gives in, they have wings !!! Standing room and for fliers only !!! LOL
Great story, fine image - thanks, dear Lyn.
Have the Australian heat waves reached New Zealand equally badly?
Here, in Szczecin, we are having the first, extremely shy snow vanishing at once :)

Very unusual and interesting shot Lyn. All bird and animal lovers would say leave it as it is. I wish you had a close shot of a parekareka:

Although I'm not a fanatic bird lover, think that leaving it as it is (like Raj already suggested above) would be the best solution.

Amazing view Lyn, all these 'New Zealand cormorants'(lol) together.

Regards, Cornelius.

At first I thought it was a Meerkat convention.
A photo of just the wharf would be fantastic, but the added residents makes in beyond fantastic.
Excellent LE.

A unique and very interesting post Lyn. I remember another type of cormorant from Hawaii - they are so large.

Mrs b and I used to think that it was quite exciting seen 15/20 cormorants drying off in Wallasey docks. This rather knocks that into a cocked hat doesn't it? Fabulous image Lyn.

I can see several large timbers hanging loose, others being pried up by those hanging and what looks like bushes growing on the pier itself. So it's obvious that it's been in disrepair for a long time. For years I've thought that as the dominant species on this planet we're often arrogant in thinking nature is below and subservient to us. Not so, and this photo proves that what we build doesn't really belong to us. Like rainwater, wildlife goes and does what it wants, the ultimate victor. Fascinating view of life unrestrained, Lyn. -Nik
