When constructed in 1926 the Aloha Tower lighthouse, the Traffic Control Centre for Honolulu Harbour was the tallest building on Oahu at 184 feet.
There is an observation deck on the 10th (top) floor which is free to visit and gives fabulous views over the harbour and city. We went to the top and enjoyed the views from all four platforms. No one else was there, just the official at the lift door to inspect our bags.
The Tower is listed on both the Hawaii and National Registers of Historic Places. It was extensively renovated in 1994 by the developers of the Aloha Tower Marketplace but now has an air of faded glory and stands proud and alone with it's clock stuck at 8 minutes past 8.
The surrounding area of the Markeplace is now owned by Hawaii Pacific University and incorporates accommodation.
In 1941 when Pearl Harbour was attacked coast guards were stationed around it to prevent it from being occupied and it was painted in camouflage so it would not be visible at night.
For one of our seafaring members,Ramad, this is likely a familiar sight.
