The Francois Langur (Presbytis francoisi) One of a group living in the Honolulu Zoo.
Also known as White-sideburned Black Leaf Monkey, and Francois Black Leaf Monkey they are endangered because of habitat loss and hunting by people who believe its parts have medicinal value.

Smooth seas do not make skilful sailors.
That fur looks to be as soft as the softest cat I ever stroked or the neck fur on my border collies. When I was in my early 20's I rather spurned zoos, decrying the conditions of the exhibits with typical young adult "enlightened condescension". Now I realize that zoos can help keep animals from succumbing to extinction caused by the dubious activities of Man. Your photo and well researched post puts it into proper perspective.

Lyn, it is still a pity for me that the BWC no longer proved to be viable.
The remarkable phenomenon, however, is that my B & W submissions got far more viewers than my color photographs.
This seems to be a contradiction, and I haven't a clear explanation about that.
You've provided us with a nice B & W photo again. Creates nostalgic feelings to me. Thanks anyway!
