Islands off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii.
Manana is the larger one and it means buoyant in Hawaiian. It is more commonly known as Rabbit Island because in the 1880's a member of Hawaiian royalty, John Adams Kuakini Cummins, raised rabbits there. They multiplied at such a rate that the ecology of the island was threatened and in 1994 the rabbits were completely eradicated and it is now a seabird wildlife sanctuary.
Kaohikaipu is the other smaller Island, known as Black Rock (for obvious reasons).

Excellent capture Lyn - there are many of these little Hawaiian islands that you never know about until you visit there.

Good one for today with its' name tho' too bad the rabbit population got out of hand like that...a beautiful location portraying nature somewhat wild and untamed.

Wow - love this. Those place names must be difficult to get your tongue around. Are they similar to Maori pronunciations?

What a beautiful capture of Hawaian surf off Waimanalo Beach, and a visual indicator of how the islands form. A study of the island chain shows how they are all in a gentle curve from the northwest to the southeast. The Hawaian Islands are an archipelago of eight major islands, several atolls, numerous smaller islets, and seamounts in the North Pacific Ocean, formed over millions of years. Kure, an atoll west of Midway is the oldest, at 28 million years, and Hawaii Island, the largest, is the youngest, at approximately 400,000 years. According to the National Ocean Service, the islands developed because of a hot spot in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The hot spot itself is fixed in place, but the plate where the volcanoes were built is moving constantly, tearing the volcanoes away from the active hot spot and carrying them northwest of the Pacific Ocean. The constant movement of the plate stops volcanoes from erupting, but it also allows new volcanoes to be formed. That is why of the five currently active volcanoes in Hawaii, one, Haleakala, is active on Maui, the second major island from the east end, three, Kilauea, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai, are on Hawai'i, the easternmost island, and Loihi, 20 miles southeast of big island and currently 3,200 feet below the surface. That being said, these two small islands you've gifted us with, Lyn, or the beach you shot them from, are going to change. They're done baking. There is so much going on in this photo--diagonals, layers, action, gentle clouds, strong waves--and it's easy to see how far up the waves and tides run, eradicating the thousands of footprints. It's fairly pristine but I imagine the only time it actually looks completely so is after a strong rainstorm. Love it.
