G'day All, Just back from my second trip to Thailand. This time entirely urban Bangkok, away from tourist destinations. The city is on a large, flat flood plain, criss-crossed with canals. Crossing one of the canals near my apartment I looked down to spy this compact backyard of a family that lived in a house built over the canal.

I doubt it will end up on many dt but I loved this intimate glimpse into a very different way of life to mine. The house is to the left, over the water. In the water you can see the very large black fish, perhaps Carp of some kind, not many of us have "pet" wild fish in our backyards! In this shot you can see the chicken and also in the central little hutch over the water are some black and white ducks. At night the chickens are in the hutch and the ducks sleep on top of it.

In the bottom left corner is the tiny "spirit house" that you see, not all of them so small as this, all over Thailand. This family's house doubled as a cafe/restaurant.

One of the things that impresses me about Thai people is the way so many people work so hard to find a way to survive by running whatever business they can grab hold of. People even have cafe's on their scooters. The vast majority of Thais would rather sell you something for five Baht (18 cents Australian.) than beg. All of this effort with grace and a smile and genuine friendliness.

The general disarray you see in this backyard is present most everywhere in Thailand, that I've seen. Many westerners would tend to interpret such messiness as a sign of laziness or something similar but I've seen how hard the Thais work and they sure as hell are not a lazy culture. Different cultures see things differently. It's dangerous to assume you know what something you see "means" in a very different culture and society to your own.

Enjoy.

Peace,

Mikel.

Although I understand your story very well Mikel, can't however understand that people aren't educated in a way that make them aware that these mashes are sources for several diseases mostly brought over by rats.

Very interesting backyard and a great insight to a different type of culture. Where I'm at, something like this would be viewed as gross and disgusting. Thanks for sharing this.

Nice view of their culture. Actually, that isn't that far different from the mess I have in my backyard at times.heheh

Great capture of everyday life.......reminds me of the southern redneck back yard (mine in particular). Nice to see how the real world lives off the beaten path.

Welcome Back!

Wow, how very sad, but fascinating I must say! I do wonder is it lack of education or could it be inclined to cultural ignorance?

Welcome Back. It's so sad things like this do happen, I know that's nature and life.

I have a hard time understanding this. There ought to be some kind of balance, yet I do see many views of this posting of yours. I try always to be openminded. But for this style of life, it's hard for me to not think that people could at least be neater and cleaner. That's always good. I find this very sad, that people choose to live this way. I don't think a person has to "have" much, but I do believe strongly in taking care of what we do need to have for our own health and survival. The Thai people really know how to cook, but on the other hand, there has been a lot on the media about the contamination of their food lately. So, I guess you helped us all to think a bit more. Thx...Verena

Your posting and picture is another reason I appreciate CAEDES so much. I get to see other beautiful countries and cultures that are very different from the way I live. I think folks need to realize that what is good for one is not necessarily good for another. Also, what looks unorganized and messy to us, might actually be perfect to that culture. 'Walk a mile in my shoes', comes to mind. As far as the comment for your pic, it is very clear and colorful and does provoke one to think about and maybe appreciate one's own life more. Thank you.
