Next to a boardwalk on a rise above the Mud Volcano in Yellowstone National Park, we came upon this small mule deer buck, a five-pointer, casually munching on sweet grass shoots among old downed forest fire trees. Oblivious of the dozen cameras clicking away, he moved from spot to spot, occasionally jumping over a tree to get to the next spot. I was on the far right end of the group, with my camera on a tripod for better clarity in the fading light of day, and I noticed what he was doing and that he was working his way in my direction. So I adjusted my settings to catch him in motion as he leaped... and finally succeeded. (Incidentally, finding him was much better than the Mud Volcano, one of the few uninteresting spots in the park.). 9.16-9

The reason why the sun sets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB

Perfectly timed and perfectly taken action shot of this mule deer buck, 'Nik'. Didn't know that there was a mule deer jumping competition, like the one for horses, ☺ !

I was able to catch him close enough--about 8 feet away--that close inspection reveals a carbuncle over his right eye!

Thanks, everyone, for stopping by.

I wish I was a Glow Worm, a Glow Worm's never glum, 'cause how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?

We call this a 10 pointer in my "neck of the woods," Knik.
What a great action shot. His horns look good still covered with velvet. Lots of nutrients in the velvet to make the horns grow.
Had to fave this beauty.

Excellent shot!

I like that you captured the soft blur of motion on his legs, while retaining perfect focal clarity throughout the rest of the deer and foreground. A nod to your vast experience and immense talent as a photographer!

You are a visual storyteller, Nik. A wonderful crafter of imagery.
