When spotting a mantis, it's fun to interact with it by slowly moving in with something long and skinny, like a pencil or a thin stick, to the face of the bug. It might raise its forearms a bit, acting in a protective manner, and by moving the point back and forth you'll get to see how its head swivels to keep the point of your object in front and in focus. When I was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan (many, many years ago), I found one behind the barracks and we kept him as a pet for a long time, fascinated at his hunting technique and when he would allow us a closer experience by perching on our hands. If you see a male in the wild, he's likely always been a bachelor... after mating with a female she kills and eats him. Yow... score one for celibacy!
