This is cropped down from the original to focus on the subject. Early in May, I organized three groups of hikers to go see the Twin Arches. The first group was going to take a 6-mile loop, the second group was going to take the 2.5-mile loop and go fast and I led the last group who wanted to take their time. In other words, about 30 people had gone down the trail before I did. Suddenly a girl two behind me gasped, "Snake!" The boy behind me said, "Snake? I'll get it." I turned and yelled, "Don't touch it! It's a copperhead!" I walked by it and didn't notice it beside the trail, but then none of the other 30 or so hikers before me saw it either. The funny part is later that evening I was going through my pictures and wondered why I took a picture of the ground. Did I accidentally hit the shutter button? Then I realized, Oh! this was the picture I took of the copperhead.

Sure glad you guys are all safe. Those are nasty little reptiles with poison bite. Mostly they will try to evade you but if they feel threatened watch out. While growing up on the farm they liked lurking about the corn crib because of the numerous mice and rats there. He blends in rather well, doesn't he? Like Tick said great story and photo.

There aren't venomous snakes in my area, Jeff. If that were true and I would come across one, I would be scared to death.
Beautiful critters, but for me only on a photo like this, 😜!

A distinctive pattern to be recorded in memory, for anyone hiking this area. A good shot but one I would have ben very careful to take... like maybe from as far away as the parking lot?
