They appear so stately, with heads held high, almost formal, that I could imagine them as a subject of colonial portraiture. "On these shores"..."sea to shining sea." However in another context turning the page to a different era and another environment, I don't think they would quibble over whether to call their fortunes...French or freedom fries.....

Paul, I think they're taking a rest after their almost endless hunt for prey in the open waters.
They are beautiful birds in themselves. In my country, seagulls are protected birds. Not everyone is happy with that because many seagulls have chosen coastal towns as their domicile. They can be aggressive when they're hungry. They don't shy away from attacking people who walk on the streets with any form of food in hand. In order to survive, they are not selective in their choice of food.
Very nice shot though.

In our area, they are not so plentiful. I have seen them be aggressive so I'm glad they are few in number. They are very pretty birds and I have a lot of fun taking still pictures of them and pictures in flight. Nice still picture of them on the beach, Paul!

When I was in the Navy out in California, every evening at 5:00 or 6:00 (cannot quite recall, it has been nearly 50 years) the loudspeaker system would play the ^Retreat of Colors^ bugle call, and the flag would be brought down for the day. No matter where you were on base you knew the location of the main flag pole and you stood at attention, facing that direction, at full salute if you were in uniform, your hand over your heart if you were in civvies. These gulls remind me so clearly of that, groups of men stopping for a minute and all facing the same direction. Good focus. Good light. Good composition. Good catch, Paul.
