You notice the falling book, just below the screaming child and the cloven hoof, horns, and wings on the gargoyle? This is a visual lesson to naughty children that, as "luckyshot" points out, the devil will pull you in if you go against your teachings. Many gargoyles in medievel churches and cathedrals used gargoyles for lessons of faith and morality. Loaded with historic churches, Nuremberg has often been referred to as the "unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire." Even the "bowl" hair style of the child in this sculpture is a period style.
