That's called a "come to a screeching halt" type path. That's as far as this kid would get unless there is a way around the log. Great detail in this image.

Not to bring down the mood, necessarily, but this looks like the sort of scene in which Peter Sutcliffe did his nasty work, waylaying women walking on isolated paths where he wouldn't be noticed. Spooky.
