In Northumberland bordering Scotland during the Middle Ages we had families of robbers called border Reivers,They would rustle the cattle,steal sheep and generally cause mayhem.The local farmers and land owners built "Bastles"..These structures would serve as mini-castles..The animals kept below and the living quarters above,Where they could be defended..Some are still lived in..This one isn't but Is in good repair..R.
