Beware the autumn people

The stuff of nightmare is their plain bread. They butter it with pain. They set their clocks by deathwatch beetles, and thrive the centuries. They were the men with the leather-ribbon whips who sweated up the Pyramids seasoning it with other people's salt and other people's cracked hearts. They coursed Europe on the White Horses of the Plague. They whispered to Caesar that he was mortal, then sold daggers at half-price in the grand March sale. Some must have been lazing clowns, foot props for emperors, princes, and epileptic popes. Then out on the road, Gypsies in time, their populations grew as the world grew, spread, and there was more delicious variety of pain to thrive on. The train put wheels under them and here they run down the log road out of the Gothic and baroque; look at their wagons and coaches, the carving like medieval shrines, all of it stuff once drawn by horses, mules, or, maybe, men.

Ray Bradbury, Something Wicked This Way Comes

Ann Putnam, Jr., Marcy Lewis, Abigail Williams, Mary Walcott and Elizabeth Hubbard accused Giles Corey of witchcraft in April of 1692. He pleaded "not guilty" but refused to be tried by the court which, in his view, had already determined his guilt, so he stood mute rather "putting himself on the country." He was sentenced to peine forte et dure, even though it was an illegal punishment, and ended up being torturously crushed to death on (or before) September 18, 1692, in Salem, Massachusetts. I imagine that his last view of this world, with rain drops falling into his eyes, might have looked like this.

A camera didn't make a great picture anymore than a typewriter wrote a great novel. (Peter Adams)

The blue eyes and the painful expression on its/his/her mouth make this to a scary one, John.
Hope that I won't meet this 'person/ghost' in my dreams.

Well this perfectly portrays the atmosphere of the novel which I read many years ago - scary stuff but I think good overcame evil in the end, just. I believe this to be Mr Dark.
Clever man, Ray Bradbury but a dark imagination :)

Another masterpiece :)

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust
