This is an 'against the light' (difficult lighting conditions) image of a replica of the 'Halve Maen', taken during a port call in Middelburg, Zeeland, The Netherlands. The original 'Halve Maen' ('Half Moon') was built in 1606 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. On April 6th, 1609 the 'Halve Maen' started her maiden voyage with the English captain and navigator Henry Hudson and a mixed English and Dutch crew in order to find a safe westward passage to the wealthy Spice Islands in the Far East.

The passage wasn't found, but they did another important discovery. For the complete story, please check-out this link.

A very beautiful photo fit for a magazine Cornelius. In spite of the bright background all details very clear.

My goodness, what a bounty of cheerful color and interesting elements to view...and your handling of the difficult lighting perfect...agree with Raj, worthy of magazine publication.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

A beautiful picture Mr C. I truly like the yellow trees as they transition the eyes from the ship to the building on shore.

While backlit photos have a tendency to not work, in this case it does, looking as good as a thumbnail as it does full. The simple element here that helps it succeed is that line of clouds approaching above the horizon. The bright sun on the cloud tops pulls the eye and provides a complementary contrast. When I first viewed it as a thumbnail I was reminded of some of the harbor paintings of the works of the old masters of the 16th Century Dutch and Flemish Renaissance. Very nice, C.

I have to say that you used the light to your advantage. It really is a good photo and you seem to have had a good vantage point from which to capture it, Cornelius. It's a beauty.
