Patriotic Feeling?

I was on my way to this tiny village (peninsula Walcheren, Zeeland, The Netherlands) when I saw this huge national Dutch flag.

I was curious about the reason for this probably overdone patriotic feeling, but on closer look I discovered that this was a way to grab some attention for a local event there.

Still a tad manic too me, so it's my weekly Manic Monday contribution.

Must be a BIG flag for a crane to hoist and show it...

A real eye-catcher...

At first glance at the thumbnail I wondered why the 'flag pole' was bent over making it a 'tad manic' in appearance...I see now I was mistaken but nevertheless, a good one for MM.

I agree it must be a whopper of flag to need a crane - so yes, I agree Mr. C. a tad manic indeed.

If you look closely you will notice a steel ball at the very bottom, providing the weight necessary to keep the flag open, regardless of wind speed. Here in the United States it is common to see this treatment of flags from 3x5 to much larger, at construction sites and where cranes and earth moving equipment are sold. It goes hand-in-hand with the long-time tradition of placing large flags at the very top of multi-storied buildings under construction, and, at Christmastime, of placing lit Christmas trees up there as well.
