this time a capture of the monument of the brothers Huberto and Johanni Van Eyck in Ghent, Belgium. These 15th century painters sit centrally on a raised double throne. Huberto holds an open Bible in his lap and has a palette with brushes on his right foot, Johanni holds his painter's palette in his left hand. On either side of the painters are sculpture groups of (half-naked) men, women and children, who pay tribute with wreaths and flower garlands. They symbolize the timeless universal humanity, stripped of all outward signs.

A very interesting monument in design Mr. C. - I see something is either under repair or being built behind with all the scaffolding.

I am taken by what surrounds the sculptures as much as by the figures, who I am somewhat familiar from my art history classes in college. On the left is the overhead cables and support that charge (I assume are) trolley cars, and the tracks below upon which they run. On the right is nine layers of scaffolding around the cathedral, for the safety and efficacy of those working on maintaining the permanence of the structure. I am taken by it because the citizenry appears to accept the modern intrusions of hardware and equipment upon the antiquity of the arts expressed in the statues. The former has to be accepted for the benefit of the latter. That is, I assume, how the old world survives in the environment of the new, and it is all illustrated here in you single capture.

I can not add much more to what others have said but to say I always enjoy what you bring in camera work and information. Good job, Cornelius!

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust
