At the Martelarenplein (Martyrs' Square) in Leuven, Belgium, a so called 'vide-greniers' was held. A 'vide-greniers' is pretty similar to a garage or yard sale in the U.S.A.
The building at the background is the Leuven railway station

Studying the photo before reading your text, C., I was thinking "garage sale", too. Nice to know there are some traditions that are intercontinental. The biggest difference is that your environment is a helluva lot more refined and dramatic than my driveway.
