Had to make a quick run down to the Bay Area week (9 hour drive one way), and stopped at the Grass Lake Rest Area to, well, take a break. The grass goes on for over a half-mile to the right of this shot. I've been here multiple times and have never seen any water, just tons of grass out there. But it you check out the online map, there actually does appear to be water out there. Unless you change from "Map View" to "Satellite View" and you can see what I mean. Somewhere. Along US Highway 97 in very northern California, USA.

I sure like the natural framing of this capture, I believe you used the new software, if you did it turned out superbly. I especially like the details of the trees. I did check out the link, but no water here. :)

I suspect if you tried to walk across it, there'd be enough water to make it problematic, like a bog or a swamp. I've crisscrossed California on many two lane highways like 97, but I don't recall driving that particular one. I usually just top off the tank in Weed and stay on the 5. There's a similar drive I like on Highway 20 between Fort Bragg and Willits, with lots of up and down twists and turns through the forest. Another couple of great drives is Highway 120 and 108. Those cross over the Sierra Nevada mountains, with lots of great scenery and photo opportunities. Happy trails.

The fact that there are no trees growing out there leads me to suspect that there may still be water but that it may have a high alkaline content, which would still allow the growth of some grasses but not trees. That white line I see along the bottom of the forest across the way shows a previous shoreline. It's a very nice shot, Ted, and a good observation. An image that makes me think is always a good thing.
