It looks all puffed up with your cold weather. Very pretty red breast alternating with the snow background.

This is really nice Pat and might go well in contest since you get a sense of depth with the tree branch shadows in the background.

Pat, think it's pretty hard for Mr. Common Redpoll Finch to survive in these severe wintry conditions.
I suppose however that a feeder will be near.
Taking into account that this capture is taken behind glass, the result is beyond any expectation,so a perfect 'bird-portrait'!
Very well done, my friend!

What a pretty bird, all fluffed up against the winter cold. Birds retain heat in their body core by fluffing out their feathers. Chickadees, for example, may appear to be twice as fat in winter as in summer, but they aren't. They are merely puffed up, thickening the insulation around their bodies. At night, they reduce heat loss by seeking shelter in tree holes or other crevices, and by reducing their body temperature~~the smaller the difference in temperature between the bird and its environment, the lower the rate of heat loss. Still, the bird may have to shiver all night and burn up most of its fat reserves, which then must be replenished the next day in order to survive the next night. Good thing they have kind humans to provide feed through the winter cold.
