Well, sort of - close up is relative in Alaska. Glacier Bay, Alaska, USA - The Johns Hopkins Glacier is one mile wide, 250 feet high. Formed from numerous tributary glaciers, the dark medial moraine veins form from each joining, the glacier continues to advance, moving about 8 feet per day. In the upper left portion of the image are the ice fields from which glaciers emanate. The mountain rock, seen in the middle, has been shaped by the glacier as well as the harsh elements. Enjoy!.

I like to agree with you Thad, because of the huge dimensions close-ups are relative in Alaska. The image gives anyhow a very good impression of the ice-cold (lol) beauty of the glaciers.

Very fine posting again.

Great action shot, Thad. You slowed the movement down so that it looks almost nonexistent. Great textures, colors and composition.

Never seen anything like this before ... First I noticed strange colours, then read about close-ups and started to look for the action... The strange, eerie and unique image, dear Thad. Thanks so much, friend.

Amazing blue color in that ice. The blue means it's very pure and very old. Glacial ice is created by many successive layers of snow that do not melt. The more layers of snow the more they are compressed and become ice rather than melting snow that is again frozen as ice. This ice often appears blue when it has become very dense. Years of compression gradually make the ice denser over time, forcing out the tiny air pockets between crystals. When glacier ice becomes extremely dense, the ice absorbs all other colors in the spectrum and reflects primarily blue, which is what we see. When glacier ice is white, that usually means that there are many tiny air bubbles still in the ice. Gorgeous photo. Visiting Alaska and getting close to a large glacier like this is on my bucket list. It may take a while before I can get there so I have to satisfy myself with images like yours. -Nik
