In 1678, a group of Huguenots, including my ancestors, settled the town of New Paltz, in what was then New Amsterdam. It is 80 miles north of New York City and 70 miles south of Albany. This house was built in 1705, and expanded in the 1830s. Part of Historic Huguenot Street, it is open to the public for tours, serving as the visitors center. Recently, I had an all-day meeting in New Paltz. Arriving early and staying late, I took photos of the houses on the street. This is a three-exposure HDR image.

Huguenot St. is the oldest street in America. This image of the Dubois House is wonderful and shows it off in the best of light! Nicely done...and a great tribute to your ancestors!!

Reading up 'somewhere' that folks painted their porches a light colour to delay the sun scorching and blistering them!!

I like the lemon colour in this one

A real old fashioned colonial house...well shot too!

---a group of Huguenots, including my ancestors---

Wouldn't surprise me if they had written the family name 'Haessebroucq' rather than 'Hasbrouck', Thad.

Excellent capture. Would be a good entry for the 'History' contest!

Regards, Cornelius.

I like the contrasting colors and the three sections of the house. The textures and colors of each section are unique and, I guess, each serve a different need for the homeowner, back when the sections and the house were built.

I'm betting the white addition is the kitchen. Some of the early homes in North Dakota were built in such a way, separating the two and using a different one in different seasons. I really like the angle and composition here, giving us a step-down view of the character of the place. All three sections must have been built at different times because of the difference in the curvature of the roofs, in the chimneys, the siding, height, color, and so on. I don't even mind the tree splitting the scene because it gives depth and a sense of the age of the place. This would be a great shot for a guide book about the area. Nice work, Thad. -Nik
