Popular entertainment during WWII was quite different from today--no mosh pits, headbangers, or headphone dances back then. "I left home with Perry Como and Ted Weems two years after graduation from high school in Monessen, Pennsylvania," Jack Corry says (the bandleader for the group in this photo). "In those days--the 1930s--you didn't stay with a band too long. If somebody offered you $5 more, you left." [from a 1984 Washington Post interview] Before he settled in the Washington area in 1939, he had played clarinet and tenor saxophone with the orchestras of Tony Pastor, Husk O'Hare, Tommy Tucker and Lawrence Welk. He led his own band for long engagements at the Riverside Stadium, the Glen Echo ballroom, the Lotus Club and many other venues over the years.

"I'm one of the few bandleaders who's still alive and still playing," Corry says. "I more or less kind of stayed with it." [again, from 1984... can find no obit for Corry but considering this last quote of his, he thought of himself as old 33 years ago, and if he was 20 in the 1930's, as the quote at the top indicates, he'd have to be nearly 100 today. Likely no one is jitterbugging to his live music now. Too bad.]

I can remember my mom, dad, uncles and aunts doing this dance when I was a kid Rob. They really glided across the floor. The lady in this photo reminds me of my mother who is 93 years old.
Great job and thanks for getting me "In The Mood" to dance.
One of my favorites thus far.

The reason why the sun sets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB

The times may have changed, but swing isn't dead, it's just morphed a bit. Electro swing has a big following, especially in Europe. Check out this wonderful little video from Caravan Palace called Rock It For Me.
