He looks like a banker or a politician Rob. It appears some sunlight would do him some good.
Crisp shot and top notch colorization.

Thomas Goode Jones?
Rob, I've searched for further details on the net, but I was on a wild goose chase (searching for a needle in a haystack).
The only perhaps relevant thing that I've found was this information, but think Thos. G. Jones wasn't a governor of the state of Alabama.
It's a pity however that this site don't provide us with more details about the portrayed person. I'm curious whether our friend 'Nik' can provide us with more details, because he's an expert in that matter.
Anyhow excellent colorization work again, my friend

I tend to agree with Tick - my initial impression of Mr. Jones was that he was a prominent businessman, politician or educator - quite a dapper gentleman and exudes confidence - Great work Rob - Mr. Jones would love your work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Wel Lyn if he was around 30 years old in the link it would work. The vote is still out on this but think were about 80% accurate. Well done thanks for the detective work.

According to the U.S. Social Security Administration, over the past 100 years Tom is the 9th most common name used for a male and Jones the 5th most common last name... no wonder we're all confused (not to mention that it's also a movie title). We're all visual people here, so for identification of "Ole T.J." here, my attempt will have to rely upon comparing portraits. First, I would place Rob's gentleman's age somewhere between 60 to 65. I consider his white hair, which can sometimes age sooner than expected, to be less telling than the skin on his face. I see about 4 or 5 wrinkles above his brow and very few bags under his eyes, so over 60 but not quite 70 years old. If I'm correct about his age that would place his birth year between 1835 and 1845. The Thomas Goode Jones who became Governor of Alabama was born in 1844, so the age certainly fits. He also has a distinctive brow, nose, and ears. The Wikipedia article that Cornelius brought to our attention shows a young Jones in uniform, a very poor photo that barely allows inspection but does show a man with a long, strong brow and intense expression, and a long, thin face with not-quite-oversized ears with rounded tops. Further down in the article is a photo, purportedly of Jones, later in life, in my estimation around 45 to 50 years of age. In this second photo he appears to be much more jowly, a heavier man, whose top half of his ears have an outer edge that is quite flat, running almost straight up, and his nose is that of the shovel type (you can see the shadow thrown by the "bulb" on the tip). The article that LynEve leads us to shows a major among his staff officers, sitting in front of his Civil War tent, possibly during the siege of Petersburg, from June of 1864 until March of 1865, a month before the end of the war. Jones would have been only 20 at that time but, during a war like this one, that destroyed so many men of any age and rank, it was not at all uncommon to have high-ranking officers of relative youth. Approximately 750,000 soldiers died from combat, accident, starvation, and disease during the Civil War, 42 percent of those confederate. I found that photo on the web and examined it closer in Photoshop, the resolution not being anywhere near as good as what Rob has provided, but it's good enough to match the facial features that do not change as a person ages. So my conclusion is that both Cornelius and Lyn are correct, that this is the man who was a confederate major in the Civil War, a District Court judge in Alabama, and the 28th governor of the same. That being said, the man shown in the Wikipedia article as an older Thomas Goode Jones is either a Tom Jones who had far too many rich campaign dinners under his belt and needed to get on a treadmill, or, quite possibly, isn't even the correct Jones in question. He sports a receding hairline, like Rob's Jones does, but the ears, nose, and a divided brow are a dead giveaway. I think whoever wrote that Wikipedia article was incorrect in his (or her) acceptance of that second photo... it's not the Thomas Goode Jones that we have come to not know but still love. Thank you. Thank you. Please make all checks payable to NikoneerSmartassc/oMimi@Caedes.whateverstrikesyourfancy.edu/com/org.

Your colorization is just enough for this enhancement. The interest in this capture is definitely the expression and attitude of this gentleman. It spikes your curiosity to uncover his thoughts. Intelligence, manners, confidence fit, but there is something else, can't put my finger on it. Excellent work on this.
